FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball took down No. 15 UC Irvine Saturday evening at Goodwin Field by a final score of 9-2. The Titans improve to 16-34 on the year and 7-19 in Big West play.Â
Fullerton got off to a hot start, scoring four runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Nico Regino got things started with a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the inning.Â
With runners on first and second base, Colby Wallace hit an RBI single to left field to drive in Jakob Schardt and give Fullerton a 2-0 lead.Â
Matthew Bardowell polished off the inning with a two-run single through the right side of the infield, scoring Wallace and Maddox Latta.Â
The Titans added to their lead in the third inning with a two-out rally capped off by an RBI single by Jack Haley to drive in Waldie Perez from second base to extend the lead to 5-0.Â
Christian Rodriguez gave the Titans one of his best starts of the season, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out six batters. UC Irvine didn't have a runner get to third base while Rodriguez was on the mound.
Fullerton pulled away in the sixth on a two-run home run by Regino for his second of the game and third of the season. Regino went 3-for-4 on the night with three runs, three RBI and a walk.Â
UC Irvine got on the board in the seventh inning, scoring two runs to cut the Titans lead to 7-2.Â
The Titans immediately responded with two runs of their own in the home half of the seventh inning to regain a seven-run lead, 9-2.Â
With Perez at second base, the Anteaters intentionally walked Regino to get to Jakob Schardt. The sophomore came through for the Titans with an RBI single to score Perez and put the Titans up 8-2. A fielding error then plagued UC Irvine to allow another run to score.Â
Jason Blood finished off the game for Fullerton. Blood pitched two shutout innings and didn't give up a single hit while walking one and striking out one.Â
The Titans look to finish the 2024 home slate strong with a series upset over No. 15 UC Irvine on senior day. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with the senior ceremony starting at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Goodwin Field.
