Titans Fall to No. 15 UC Irvine in Extra Innings

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball dropped the series opener to No. 15 UC Irvine Friday night at Goodwin Field by a final score of 10-6 in 12 innings. The Titans are now 15-34 on the year and 6-19 in Big West play.

The Titans struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Waldie Perez to score Colby Wallace from third base.

UC Irvine came back to score one run in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Anteaters scored two runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 3-1

Fullerton scored one run in the home half of the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Titans had the bases loaded with no outs and hit into a double play which allowed one run to score.

The Anteaters extended their lead to 5-2 with two more runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back solo home runs.

Following back-to-back one-out hits by Moises Guzman and Nico Regino, Jakob Schardt hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Guzman and cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Titans took the lead in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. With runners on first and third, Perez had a productive infield out to score Eli Lopez from third base. With two outs and Bardowell at first, Jack Haley hit a triple to left field after the outfielder fell down on the play to bring home Bardowell.

One batter later, Guzman singled to right field to drive in Haley and give Fullerton a 6-5 lead.

UC Irvine came back to tie the game with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to send the game to extra innings. Latta made a great play at shortstop on play later, throwing out a runner at home to not allow UCI to take the lead.

The two teams went scoreless over the next two innings in extras before Caden Kendle led-off the 12th with a home run to right field to give UCI the lead. The Anteaters went on to score four runs in the 12th to take a 10-6 lead.

Fullerton looks to even the series with UC Irvine in game two Saturday evening at Goodwin Field. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. with the 2004 National Championship team ceremony scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
