Baseball Defeats UC Davis on Mother's Day

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball defeated UC Davis, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field to stave off a series sweep. With the win the Titans improve to 15-33 on the year and 6-18 in Big West play.

Similar to the first two games of the series, UC Davis struck first. The Aggies scored one run in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Riley Acosta.

Jason Blood gave the Titans a solid outing in his first start of the season, allowing just the one run on four hits in four innings pitched. Blood struck out five batters while not issuing a walk.

The Titans scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead which they would not relinquish.

Waldie Perez led-off the inning with a double before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Haley. Moises Guzman then drove in Perez on an RBI single through the middle of the infield to tie the game at 1-1.

Following a wild pitch that allowed Guzman to advance to second, Jakob Schardt hit a single to left field which was bobbled by the left fielder to give Guzman enough time to score and give Fullerton the lead.

In the ninth inning the Titans called on Seth Tomczak to close the game out. Tomczak would have retired the side in order if not for a defensive error while striking out two batters to earn his fifth save of the season.

Freshman Derek Turner earned his first win of the season after pitching two shutout innings in relief. Turner allowed just one hit while striking out two.

Fullerton is back in action next weekend against UC Irvine in its final weekend series of the season at Goodwin Field. The program will honor the 2004 National Championship team prior to Saturday's game and senior day will be held Sunday.
