BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton split Saturday's doubleheader with CSU Bakersfield, losing game one 1-0 before taking game two 13-5 at Hardt Field. The Titans are now 10-18 on the year and 3-8 in Big West play.Â
Game One (L, 1-0)
The Titans were shutout in game while recording four hits and leaving seven runners on base.Â
Mikiah Negrete had another great start for the Titans, allowing just one run on seven hits while walking one batter and striking out one in 6.1 innings pitched. Negrete allowed the only run in the first inning of the game.Â
Eli Lopez continued his strong play at the plate, going 2-for-4 on the day to improve his team-high batting average to .320 after the first game of the doubleheader.Â
Game Two (W, 13-5)
Fullerton completely flipped the script in game two of the doubleheader. The offense equaled its hit total of four from game one in the first two innings of the second game. The Titans would go on to score 13 runs on a season-high 19 hits.Â
The Titans fell behind 3-0 as Bakersfield scored two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth.Â
Peyton Jones got his first start of the season and allowed three runs (two unearned) on seven hits in five innings pitched. Jones struck out three batters while not issuing a walk.Â
Jakob Schardt got the Titans offense going in the sixth with a one-out single before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. Draven Nushida then singled through the left side of the infield to bring home Schardt and get the Titans on the scoreboard.Â
Max Ortega kept the inning going with a single through the right side of the infield to advance Nushida to third. With runners on the corners Luke Mistone laid down a perfect bunt to score Nushida and cut Bakersfield lead to 3-2.Â
The Roadrunners came back to score one run in the home half of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 4-2.Â
With Nico Regino on first base following a two-out single, Schardt hit his first career home run to tie the game at 4-4. Schardt, who entered the game in the fifth inning as a defensive substitution.Â
Fullerton wasn't done there. With runners on the corners Luke Mistone hit an RBI single to right center field to bring home Nushida and give the Titans its first lead of the day, 5-4.Â
Jack Haley came up clutch in a key spot, hitting an RBI single to left field to drive in Ortega and extend the Titans lead to 6-4.Â
With the bases loaded and two outs, Alijah Ramos drew a four pitch walk to bring in another run and put the Titans up 7-4.Â
Maddox Latta kept the inning going with a two-run double to left field, driving in Haley and Lopez to push Fullerton's lead to 9-4.Â
Bakersfield gifted the Titans two more runs with two errors on one play, allowing Ramos and Latta to score and make it a 11-4 game.Â
Schardt capped off the inning with an RBI single to left field to bring home Regino and extend Fullerton's lead to 12-4. Schardt went 2-for-2 in the seventh inning alone with one run and three RBI.Â
Fullerton scored all 10 runs in the seventh inning with two outs. The Titans 10 runs in the seventh inning is the most scored in a single inning since May 7, 2022 against UC San Diego. Â
The Roadrunners got one run back in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run.Â
Fullerton went on to score one more run in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single by Schardt to score Ramos and make it a 13-5 game. Schardt had a career game, going 4-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. His four hits, two runs and four RBI are all career-highs.Â
Andrew Morones earned the win for the Titans after pitching one inning in relief. Morones allowed one run on two hits while walking one and striking out one batter. Michael Flores had a quality relief appearance, pitching 2.1 shutout innings while giving up just one hit.Â
The two teams will meet for the series-deciding game three Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
