BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball lost the rubber game to CSU Bakersfield by final score of 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field. The Titans drop to 10-19 on the year and 3-9 in conference play.Â
Fullerton got off to a strong start, scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning to take an early lead.Â
Eli Lopez started the game with a single on the first pitch to get the Titans offense started. With one out, Maddox Latta hit a two-run home run to center field to put Fullerton up 2-0.Â
Following a Max Ortega base hit and Draven Nushida walk, Waldie Perez singled to left field to bring home Ortega and extend the Titans lead to 3-0.Â
CSU Bakersfield cut the Titans lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Max Bernal.Â
Derek Turner gave the Titans a strong start, giving up just two runs on four hits in five innings pitched. Turner struck out a career-high five batters while not issuing a walk.Â
The Roadrunners came back to tie the game in the home half of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Kyler Stancato. Seth Tomczak came on in relief for the Titans with the bases loaded and nobody and limited the damage to just one run.Â
Fullerton quickly responded to retake the lead with one run in the seventh inning. After a leadoff bunt single by Jack Haley, Maddox Latta hit an RBI single to right center field to drive him home from third base.Â
CSU Bakersfield scored the game-tying run in the seventh inning before scoring the game-winning run in the eighth.Â
The Titans had a chance to tie the game in the ninth with runners on first and second but a called strike three ended the game.Â
Fullerton is back at Goodwin Field next weekend for a three-game conference series against UC Riverside beginning Friday night.
