DAVIS, Calif. - The historic Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo season came to end on Friday morning at the Schaal Aquatics Center as the No. 8 seeded Titans lost to the No. 1 seeded University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine 19-6 at the Big West Championship Quarterfinals.Â
The Titans (10-19) finished their sophomore season by picking up their first ever win over a ranked opponent (Feb. 14 vs Biola), first ever Big West Conference win (Apr. 7 vs CSUN), and receiving votes in the National Polls after their win over CSUN.
The Titans had six unique goal scorers for the day against the Rainbow Wahine as
Eden Tal,
Delaney Wilder,
Kieran Scout Bates,
Brittney Pino,
Taylor Mason, and
Destiny Hernandez all found the back of the net. Â
Annabelle Sherman made four saves including a 5-meter penalty save and
Haden Skye Bates played the final four minutes and made one save for the game.
The Titans played admirably in the first quarter, holding the No. 2 team in the country and No. 1 seed in the conference to just three goals. After Hawai'i scored twice to start the quarter,
Eden Tal scored for the Titans to make it a 2-1 game.Â
Hawai'i was able to score with 23 seconds left in the quarter to take a 3-1 lead.
However, the Hawaii depth was able to overwhelm the Titans the rest of the way. Â Hawai'i scored the first four goals in the second quarter to open up a 7-1 lead. Â
Delaney Wilder scored to make it a 7-2 game. Â
However, the Rainbow Wahine added two more scores to take a 9-2 lead into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, Hawai'i scored the first goals of the period to make it a 15-2 game and put it out of reach. Â The Titans were able to grab two more goals in the period as
Kieran Scout Bates and
Brittney Pino scored to make it a 16-4 game heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was a more even affair as Hawaii only outscored the Titans 3-2 in the period. Â
Taylor Mason found the back of the net to give the Titans their fifth goal of the game.
Destiny Hernandez stole the ball during Hawaii's possession and was able to swim away for a fast break goal to score the final tally for the Titans for the 2024 season.
The Titans had their first true senior class this season and graduated 10 players including six from the inaugural team. Â
