SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 6 seeded Cal State Fullerton Titans defeated the No. 3 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine 4-2 on Thursday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The Titans moved to 16-8 for the season.  The match was delayed by over two hours after rain delayed the start of the earlier 9 AM match between Long Beach State and Cal Poly. The Titans have advanced to their sixth Big West Semifinal in the past seven seasons (2020 Season was canceled due to Covid-19). Â
The Titans took an early 1-0 lead over Hawai'i after securing the doubles point. The Titans had to play from behind after dropping the No. 1 doubles pairing. Â However, Milena Gevorgyan and Seha Yu dispatched their No. 3 doubles opponents 6-3 to tie the game. Â The No. 2 pairing of Natalie Duffy and Mariia Nikitash won their match 7-5 to give the Titans the doubles point.
In singles play, the University of Hawai'i took an early 2-1 lead over the Titans after winning in No. 3 singles and No. 6 singles.  However, Seha Yu was able to tie the match at 2-2 after winning her No. 4 singles match 6-2, 7-6
No. 1 Josie Usereau came back after dropping the first set and won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to give the Titans a 3-2 lead.  Milena Gevorgyan sealed the match for the Titans in a three set battle in No. 5 singles.  She dropped the first set before ultimately winning the match for the Titans 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Titans will take on No. 7 UC Davis in the Big West Championship Semifinals at 12 PM tomorrow. The Aggies upset the No. 2 seeded CSUN Matadors 4-0 in their quarterfinal match earlier today. The Titans defeated UC Davis 6-1 on April 6th, the start of the Titans current streak of winning seven of their last eight matches.  On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 UC Santa Barbara takes on No. 5 Cal Poly which is a rematch of last week's regular season finale which saw Cal Poly and UCSB finish in a 3-3 draw after a successful lineup challenge by Cal Poly that negated UCSB's win over the Mustangs and ultimately bumped the Titans from the 5th to 6th seed in the Big West Championship. Â
