IRVINE, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team dropped their regular season finale with a 69-53 loss against UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center.
The Titans have ultimately advanced to the Big West Championship first round as the No. 8 seed due to the University of Hawai'i defeating Cal State Bakersfield 85-48 in Bakersfield.
The Titans offense was led by
Ashlee Lewis with 14 points and 7 rebounds and
Gabi Vidmar with 11 points and 5 rebounds. Â The Titans shot 39% from the floor and committed 18 turnovers. Â The Anteaters shot 45.6% from the floor and had three scorers in double digits with Moulayna Johnson Sidi Baba leading all scorers with 20 points.
The Titans struggled in the first quarter with UC Irvine jumping to a 15-6 lead. Â
Ashlee Lewis scored four of the six points for the Titans in the first quarter. Â The Titans shot 3-for-15 from the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Anteaters quickly extended their lead to double figures. Â The Anteaters pushed their lead to 23 points at 31-23 before the Titans got some points back. Â The Titans got six straight points from Lewis,
Demonnie Lagway, and
Emily Strachan. Â
Brielle Minor made two free throws to close out the period with the Titans down 35-18.
The Titans played much better in the second half including outscoring the Anteaters 35-34. Â After the Anteaters went ahead 40-18,
Gabi Vidmar rattled off five straight points from a three pointer and a steal and a bucket.
Vidmar hit a second triple in the period and
Fujika Nimmo made a last second jumper to close the gap to 15 points at 49-34 to end the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter,
Eva Levingston scored six points early off her jump shot. Â The Titans cut the lead to within 12 points after a 3-pointer from
Fujika Nimmo made it 53-41.
The Titans and Anteaters traded baskets the rest of the quarter and
Hope Hassmann had a last second buzzer beater waved off to end the game.
The Titans will be the No. 8 seed in the Big West Tournament and will take on the No. 5 seed in a 1st round matchup on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 12:00 PM at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada.
