FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton Baseball run-ruled Jacksonville in both games of the doubleheader Saturday, 13-2 and 15-3, to sweep the weekend series at Goodwin Field. Fullerton is now 7-7 on the year.Â
The Titans dominated the weekend from start to finish, out scoring Jacksonville 40-7 in the three games.Â
Game One (13-2)
Fullerton got out to a hot start in game one, scoring four runs in the first inning on three hits. The Titans loaded the bases with the first three batters on a single, an error and a hit by pitch. Cam Burdick then worked a five pitch walk to bring in a run.Â
With bases loaded and one out, Maddox Latta hit a bases clearing double to give the Titans an early 4-0 lead.Â
The Titans extended their lead in the third inning on a two-run home run by Jared Snyder to make it a 6-0 lead. For Snyder, it was his first game, hit, home run and RBI as a Titan.Â
Fullerton pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Latta to drive in Marcos Rosales.Â
Jacksonville got on the board with two runs in the top of the sixth inning before the Titans blew the game open with six runs in the sixth inning on six hits. Latta, Draven Nushida, Snyder, Moises Guzman, Eli Lopez and Rosales all recorded RBI in the inning.Â
Christian Rodriguez had a bounce back start for the Titans. The right-handed pitcher allowed two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings pitched while walking just one batter and striking out a career-high 11.Â
The game was called after the top of the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule that was decided on prior to the game because of the doubleheader.Â
Game Two (15-3)
The second game of the day started in similar fashion as the Titans scored four runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead.Â
Colby Wallace started the scoring on an RBI double to right field to give Lopez the green light to score from second. Latta then crushed a three-run home run to left field to put the Titans up 4-0.
Fullerton kept pouring it on in the second inning, scoring three runs on an RBI double from Burdick and a two-run single from Rosales to extend the lead to 7-0.Â
Jacksonville gained some momentum in the third inning with three runs to cut the Titans lead to 7-3.Â
However, the Titans quickly answered with three runs in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Wallace hit a single through the right side of the infield to drive in Guzman and Lopez. Latta capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 10-3.Â
The Titans added two more runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Lopez and a run-scoring triple by Nico Regino. Lopez went 3-for-4 in the game with three runs and an RBI. The sophomore leads the team with a .370 batting average.Â
Fullerton surpassed the 10-run rule with three runs in the sixth inning. Alijah Ramos got the Titans offense going with his first collegiate hit in his first game of the season. Ramos was immediately followed by Waldie Perez who recorded his first Div. I hit and RBI to bring Latta home. Guzman then singled to bring home Ramos and Perez and put the Titans up 15-3.Â
Jason Blood (1-0) earned the win for the Titans in the second game of the doubleheader after allowing just two hits in 4.2 innings pitched while walking one and striking out four batters. In 15 innings pitched this season, Blood has a 1.80 ERA while walking just three batters and striking out 16.Â
Latta had a career day, going a combined 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs, nine RBI and two walks. Latta had five RBI in game one and four RBI in game two.Â
The Titans look to carry their momentum into Wednesday's midweek game against Ohio State at Goodwin Field before hitting the road to start Big West play next weekend at UC San Diego.
