FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton Baseball's ninth inning comeback fell short, losing to Ohio State by a final score of 13-10 Wednesday night at Goodwin Field. The Titans are now 7-8 on the year.Â
After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, the Titans answered with a tied for season-high seven runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take an early 7-1 lead. Fullerton's seven runs came on five hits and two Ohio State errors.Â
The Titans loaded the bases with no outs on a leadoff walk by Moises Guzman, followed by a single up the middle from Cam Burdick and a defensive error by the Buckeyes. Marcos Rosales then ripped a ball at the third baseman that took a nasty hop to get past him and allow Guzman and Burdick to score.Â
Colby Wallace then hit an RBI double to right field to drive in Lopez before another error by Ohio State gave Rosales the opportunity to reach home and put the Titans up 4-1. Wallace gave the Titans a big boost at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while adding a walk.
Fullerton added three more runs in the inning on an RBI single by Nico Regino, a passed ball which allowed Maddox Latta to score, and an infield single by Jared Snyder.Â
Ohio State responded with one run in the second inning before the Titans countered with a run of their own in the home half of the second. Latta singled through the left side of the infield to bring home Draven Nushida and regain the Titans six run lead, 8-1.Â
The Buckeyes continued to battle and kept chipping away at the Titans lead, scoring four runs in the third, one run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to eventually take control of the game.Â
After scoring eight runs in the first two innings, the Titans were shutout for the next six innings. Fullerton trailed 11-8 going into the ninth before giving up two runs in the top of the inning.Â
The Titans started to rally in the ninth inning, scoring two runs on an RBI double by Latta and an RBI single by Alijah Ramos. However, with the bases loaded and one out the final two batters struck out to end the game.Â
Latta continued his strong play at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. In the Titans last three games, Latta is hitting .667 (6-for-9) with six runs and 11 RBI while hitting three doubles and a home run.Â
Dylan Goff got the start for the Titans and allowed one run on two hits in one inning pitched in his collegiate debut. Ryan Faulks drew the loss to drop to 0-2 on the year. Jacob Morin earned the win for Ohio State to improve to 1-0 this season.Â
Fullerton turns its attention to Big West play as the team heads south to face UC San Diego in its conference opener. The three-game series begins Friday night at 6:00 p.m. at Triton Ballpark.
