SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo split their first day at the Aztec Invitational in their final pre-conference tournament of the season.
The Titans defeated Concordia University Irvine in an overtime 10-9 win on a last second goal from
Destiny Hernandez. Â The Titans fell in their second game against the No. 17 San Jose State, 16-8. The Titans moved to 1-8 against ranked opponents in the Top-25 this season.
Cal State Fullerton 10, CUI 9
The Titans won their first game (10-9) in exciting fashion as
Destiny Hernandez unloaded a last second shot before the overtime buzzer sounded to give the Titans a win over the Golden Eagles.
Hernandez led the Titans with four goals and one assist for the game. Â
Faith Cuevas also had a hat trick in the game. Â
Shyanne Rainey had two goals and
Kieran Scout Bates scored the other goal for the Titans. Â
Annabelle Sherman made 6 saves in the cage.
CUI scored the first goal of the game before
Faith Cuevas found the equalizer 19 seconds later.
The Golden Eagles went ahead 2-1 before
Shyanne Rainey made it a 2-2 game for the rest of the first period.
Each side scored three goals a piece in the second quarter. Â The Golden Eagles went ahead 4-2 before the Titans tied the game with goals from Hernandez and Cuevas to make it 4-4.
CUI went ahead with 47 seconds before
Kieran Scout Bates scored before the end of the quarter to make it 5-5 at halftime.
The Titans went on a nice scoring run in the third quarter to take an 8-5 lead after they got consecutive goals from Cuevas, Rainey, and Hernandez.
The Golden Eagles got one goal back to make it an 8-6 game heading into the final quarter. CUI scored twice in the fourth quarter and
Shyanne Rainey had a penalty saved to send the game into overtime. The Titans struck first in overtime after
Eden Tal found the back of the net on a long range strike.
However, the Golden Eagles equalized a minute later to make it a 9-9 game. The game looked like it was heading into another overtime period until
Destiny Hernandez unloaded a shot in the lower right corner with one second left.
Cal State Fullerton 8, No. 17 San Jose State 16
The Titans fell in their second game against the No. 17 San Jose State Spartans, 16-8.
The Titans had seven unique goal scorers with
Madelyn Halva,
Destiny Hernandez,
Gabrielle Zaretskiy (2),
Shyanne Rainey,
Kylie Corwin,
Eden Tal, and
Brittney Pino finding the back of the net.
Annabelle Sherman played three quarters and made four saves while
Haden Skye Bates played the final quarter and made one save.
The Titans put an early scare on the Spartans after taking the initial lead through
Madelyn Halva. Â
After the Spartans scored twice, the Titans responded with two goals of their own from
Brittney Pino and
Gabrielle Zaretskiy.
The score was tied 3-3 after the first quarter. The Spartans scored twice to start the second period before
Kylie Corwin got one back for the Titans to make it a 5-4 game.
The Spartans added one more before
Shyanne Rainey got on board to make it a 6-5 game.
 However, they added three goals late in the second quarter to make it 10-6 after two quarters.
The Spartans scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter to break it open and take a 14-6 lead. The Titans and Spartans traded two goals a piece in the fourth quarter. Â
Eden Tal opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and Destiny Hernadez scored on a 5-meter penalty  in the final goal of the game.
The Titans will conclude the Aztec Invitational tomorrow with two games. Â The Titans will take on La Salle in the morning before playing No. 13 Indiana again in their second game at 4:10.
