FULLERTON, Calif. â Cal State Fullerton Baseball snapped a four-game losing streak Friday night with a 12-2 series-opening win over Jacksonville at Goodwin Field. The Titans improve to 5-7 on the year with the victory.Â
The Titans fell behind early, giving up a solo home run in the top of the first inning. The offense quickly responded, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the first on a sacrifice fly by Colby Wallace to score Eli Lopez.Â
Cam Burdick gave Fullerton the lead in the second inning, hitting his first career home run to make it a 2-1 game. Burdick went 1-for-2 on the night with a game-high three runs, an RBI and a tied for game-high three walks.Â
The game stayed at 2-1 for a few innings thanks to another strong outing from Mikiah Negrete on the mound. Negrete improved to 2-0 on the year after giving up just one run on three hits in six innings of work.Â
The Titans pulled away later in the game with a seven run seventh inning to take a 9-1 lead. Moises Guzman started the inning with a leadoff walk before Lopez doubled to right centerfield to bring him home and put the Titans up 3-1. Lopez increased his team-leading batting average to .316 after going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.Â
Following a Maddox Latta walk, Marcos Rosales hit a single to load the bases with no outs for the Titans. Jacksonville's pitchers struggled to find the strike zone the entire inning, allowing the next three runs to score on a walk, hit by pitch and wild pitch.Â
With the bases loaded once again, Draven Nushida singled through the right side of the infield to bring home Wallace and Nico Regino to extend the Titans lead to 8-1. Burdick capped off the inning, scoring on a wild pitch to make it a 9-1 Titans lead.Â
Fullerton added three runs in the eighth inning in similar fashion. First on a productive out by Jack Haley to drive in a run with the bases loaded. Followed by a wild pitch that allowed two runs to score.Â
The Titans took advantage of Jacksonville's mistakes and struggles on the mound, benefitting from three hit by pitches, eight wild pitches and 15 walks. Fullerton's 15 walks is the most since the team had 13 against UC Davis on April 1, 2010.Â
Fullerton and Jacksonville will meet for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Goodwin Field. Game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with game two set to start 45 minutes after game one ends. Game two will not be streamed on ESPN+.
