FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team dropped their penultimate game of the regular season in a 65-50 loss against UC Riverside at home on Thursday night at Titan Gym.
The Titans fell to 10-19 overall for the season and 6-13 in Big West Conference play. The Titans still control their fate to the Big West tournament after being a game ahead of Cal State Bakersfield. A win against UC Irvine would secure the Titans spot in the Big West Tournament or a Cal State Bakersfield loss against the University of Hawai'i.
Ashlee Lewis led all scorers for the contest as she scored 20 points and hauled in 9 rebounds. She also blocked 4 shots for the game. However, she was the only Titan in double figures in scoring for the game. The Titans shot 40.4% from the floor while the Highlanders shot 41.9% from the floor. The Titans had 16 turnovers which led to 21 points for the Highlanders.
The Titans led early to start the game for the only during the first quarter.
Ashlee Lewis scored the first bucket of the game followed by a Nimmo jumper. The Titans were able to tie the game up at 10-10 in the first before UC Riverside got their first lead of the game that they held onto the rest of the game.
The Titans finished the quarter down by 6 (21-15) after
Aixchel Hernandez made a jump shot on the Titans final possession of the quarter.
The Titans tried to claw their way back early in the second half after a
Demonnie Lagway three pointer cut the lead to one point at 21-20.
However, the Highlanders were able to rebuild their lead to 8 points after a couple costly Titan turnovers. The Titans ended up finished the second quarter trailing by 10, at 37-27.
The Titans and Highlanders traded baskets to start the third quarter. The Titans looked like they were going to make a run after
Ashlee Lewis made a jumper and the Titans stole the ball on the next play which led to a fastbreak layup for Lagway to cut the lead back to eight points.
However, the Titans were never able to bridge the gap and went behind 12 points to end the third quarter at 52-40.
The Highlanders outscore the Titans 13-to-10 in the final quarter to complete the series sweep over the Titans.
The Titans will head to UC Irvine on Saturday for the final game of the regular season. The Anteaters locked up the No. 2 seed and a bye to the Big West Tournament semifinals after their win over Cal Poly on Thursday night. Tip-off for Saturday is set for 2:00 p.m.
