FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton Baseball lost to USC at Goodwin Field Tuesday night by a final score of 6-5. The Titans drop to 4-7 on the year with the loss.Â
The Titans jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by Marcos Rosales. The freshman leads the team with three home runs this season.Â
Payton Hawkinson got his second start of the season and pitched 1.1 innings, not allowing a single hit and striking out two batters. However, the freshman struggled with command and walked three batters.Â
USC came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning, scoring on a wild pitch.Â
The Titans quickly answered with two runs in the home half of the fourth inning on a two-run double by Max Ortega to drive in Matthew Bardowell and Draven Nushida to take a 3-1 lead.
The Trojans responded in the top of the fifth inning with three runs to retake the lead, 4-3.Â
Fullerton punched right back with a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. Nico Regino recorded his first RBI as a Titan on a double to left center field to bring home Nushida.Â
Nushida and Regino both had strong games for the Titans, going 2-for-5 with two runs and 2-for-4 with an RBI, respectively.Â
The two teams kept exchanging blows in the sixth inning. USC struck in the top of the inning to take a 5-4 lead. Eli Lopez later tied the game for the Titans in the bottom of the inning, scoring from second base on a failed pickoff attempt by the catcher trying to throw out Rosales at first.Â
USC scored what would be the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning with two outs. Ryan Faulks (0-1) drew the loss for Fullerton while Xavier Martinez (1-0) earned the win for USC.Â
Fullerton looks to get back in the win column this weekend as Jacksonville comes to town for a three-game series beginning Friday night at Goodwin Field. The two sides will play a doubleheader Saturday with the first game beginning at 2:00 p.m.
