FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo team saw their fourth quarter comeback against California Baptist University fall just short as they fell 9-8 at home in their first game at the Titan Aquatics Center in over a month.Â
The Titans trailed 9-5 with 7:18 left in the game. The Titans scored three unanswered goals over the final six minutes to keep the game within one score. However, the Titans couldn't come up with a scoring play over their final two possessions against the Lancers. Â
Shyanne Rainey led the the Titans with four goals.Â
Destiny Hernandez had four points after scoring twice and assisting on two goals.Â
Kieran Scout Bates had three pints after scoring and assisting on two goals.Â
Eden Tal was the other Titan to get on the scoresheet.Â
Annabelle Sherman made 11 saves in the cage for the Titans.Â
CBU led 3-0 after the first period of play.Â
Shyanne Rainey scored twice within the first two minutes of the second quarter to make it a 3-2 game. Â The Lancers got one goal back before Keiran Scout Bates finished the quarter with a goal to make it 4-3 heading into halftime.
Shyanne Rainey started the scoring in the third period to tie the game up for the first time at 4-4. Â However, the Lancers quickly got three goals to restore a 3-goal advantage. Â
Destiny Hernandez rifled in a shot with 1:05 left to make it a 7-5 game. Â The Lancers scored on their ensuing possession to keep a 4-goal lead heading into the final frame.
The Lancers restored their four goal lead to start the 4th quarter after scoring on a 5-meter penalty shot. The Titans got goals back in the fourth quarter from
Destiny Hernandez (5:41),
Shyanne Rainey (2:29), and
Eden Tal (1:26) to make it a 1-goal lead for the Lancers. However, the Titans had a bad pass stop the momentum during their second to last possession and they couldn't get a shot off during the final possession with six seconds left.
The Titans will stay at home over their next two games next weekend. Â They will take on UC San Diego next Friday at 7 PM and CSUN on Sunday at 12 PM.
