Titans Beat Cal Poly in Big West Home Opener to Snap Losing Streak

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton Baseball snapped its seven-game losing streak after defeating Cal Poly, 8-2, in its Big West home opener Thursday night at Goodwin Field. The Titans improve to 9-15 on the year and 2-5 in conference play with the win.Ā 

The Titans came out motivated in the first inning, scoring three runs on four hits to take an early lead. Eli Lopez got the offense going right away with a leadoff single to set the tone for the game. After getting to third base on an infield out and a flyout, Moises Guzman brought home Lopez on a double to left field.Ā 

With two outs and a runner at second, Colby Wallace hit a two-run home run to right field to put the Titans up 3-0. Wallace now has a tied for team-high three home runs this season after hitting his first home run since game three at Stanford on opening weekend.Ā 

Cal Poly came back to score two runs in the top half of the third inning to cut the Titans lead to 3-2.Ā 

Fullerton answered right back, scoring two runs of its own in the home half of the third inning to regain a three run lead at 5-2.Ā 

After back-to-back singles by Maddox Latta and Guzman, Wallace hit a double to right field to drive in his third run of the game. Wallace went 2-for-3 on the day with one run, three RBI and a walk.Ā 

Jakob Schardt followed with an RBI single up the middle to bring home Guzman and extend the Titans lead to 5-2. Schardt went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI while Guzman went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.Ā 

Mikiah Negrete had another impressive outing on the mound for the Titans, allowing just two runs on six hits in seven innings pitched. Negrete walked just one batter and struck out six while throwing a career-high 109 pitches. Negrete improves to 4-1 on the year with the win while lowering his ERA to 2.98.Ā 

Following Negrete's seven innings, the Titans turned to right-handed reliever Seth Tomczak out of the bullpen. Tomczak allowed just one hit while striking out one in two innings pitched to earn his fourth save of the season.Ā 

After four scoreless innings, the Titans pulled away in the eighth with three runs on two hits and two defensive errors by Cal Poly. Fullerton scored its first run of the inning on a productive infield out by Draven Nushida that allowed Luke Mistone to score from third.Ā 

With base runners on second and third, Maddox Latta singled to the shortstop which brought home Waldie Perez before a throwing error allowed Lopez to score from second base. Latta went 2-for-3 with one run, one RBI and two walks.Ā 

Lopez had another strong game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs. The sophomore leads the team with a .322 batting averageĀ 

The two teams will meet Friday afternoon for a doubleheader at Goodwin Field with the first game beginning at 4:00 p.m. PT. Game two will start 45 minutes after game ends.
