LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton Baseball fell to Long Beach State Saturday night at Blair Field by a final score of 4-3. The Titans drop to 8-13 on the year and 1-4 in conference play.
The Titans struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning off a solo home run by Long Beach native, Moises Guzman. Guzman was a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a home run, double, single with one run and an RBI.
Fullerton extended its lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning on a productive infield out by Draven Nushida to score Guzman from third base. The Titans scored another run in the seventh on a defensive error by Long Beach that allowed Luke Mistone to score and make it a 3-0 game.
Long Beach State responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Christian Rodriguez gave the Titans a quality start, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Rodriguez recorded four strikeouts while not issuing a walk.
Long Beach State took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly. Adrian Lopez stole second base with one out before a passed ball allowed him to reach third and score on a flyout hit to shallow right field.
Alijah Ramos pinch hit for the Titans to leadoff the ninth inning and reached base on an infield single. A sacrifice bunt put Ramos, the tying run, in scoring position with one out but a pop up and ground out ended the game.
Seth Tomczak (1-1) got the loss for the Titans after giving up the winning run in the eighth inning. Tomczak gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits in 1.2 innings pitched. It is his first runs given up this season.
Fullerton looks to bounce back and avoid the series sweep in game three at Long Beach State Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT.
