Titans Late Push Falls Short at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton Baseball lost the series opener at Long Beach State Friday night by a final score of 5-2. The Titans drop to 8-12 on the year and 1-3 in Big West play with the loss. 

Long Beach got out to an early lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Dirtbags extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning with another two runs scored. A solo home run in the sixth inning put Long Beach up 5-0. 

Mikiah Negrete picked up his first loss of the season (3-1) after giving up five runs on nine hits in six innings pitched. 

The Titans finally got on the board in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Marcos Rosales that scored Eli Lopez from first base. 

With two outs, Moises Guzman doubled down the left field line to bring home Rosales and cut the Titans deficit to 5-2. 

Fullerton put pressure on Long Beach State in the ninth inning as Draven Nushida reached base on an error before Lopez drew a walk with two outs to put the tying run at the plate. However, the Titans struck out to end the game and strand the runners.

The Titans had its chances to bring in more runs throughout the game, however, they left nine runners on base with four of them being in scoring position. 

Ryan Faulks had an impressive outing in relief, tossing two shutout innings while only giving up one hit and striking out a career-high five batters. 

Fullerton looks to even up the series Saturday night at Blair Field in game two against Long Beach State. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. PT.
