ORANGE, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo team won both their games on Saturday at the Claremont Convergence Tournament against the Virginia Military Institute and Iona at the Allred Aquatics Center at CHapman University. Â
The Titans went 3-1 at the tournament with an 18-8 win over VMI and an 11-10 (Overtime) win over Iona.Â
Cal State Fullerton 18, Virginia Military Institute 8
The Titans overwhelmed the Virginia Military Institute in their first game on Saturday morning. The Titans had four players score hat tricks with
Shyanne Rainey leading the team with four goals,
Madelyn Halva scored three,
Gabrielle Zaretskiy scored three goals, and
Delaney Wilder chipped also had three goals.
The Titans scored six goals in the first quarter against VMI with
Shyanne Rainey scoring two,
Madelyn Halva scoring two, and
Kieran Scout Bates and
Sydney Brouwer each scoring once.
Rainey got her hat trick to start the second quarter. Â The Titans also got goals from
Destiny Hernandez, Scout Bates, and
Eden Tal in the quarter. The Titans led 10-4 after the first two quarters
The Titans added four goals in the third quarter with Rainey finding her fourth goal, Zaretskiy scoring two, and
Delaney Wilder scoring. Â The Titans led 15-6 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Halva, Zaretskiy and Wilder each scored their third goal of the period to earn their hat tricks and complete the 18-8 win over the Keydets
.Â
Cal State Fullerton 11, Iona 10 (Overtime)
The Titans earned a late comeback win over Iona in overtime in their second game of the day at the Claremont Converence. Â
After allowing a late goal against the Gaels with 0:13 left on the clock, the Titans fell behind 9-8.Â
Sydney Brouwer scored with two seconds left on the clock to tie the game to send it to overtime.
In overtime, the TItans found goals from
Shyanne Rainey and
Taylor Mason to earn the win over the Gaels.Â
Shyanne Rainey was the only Titan with two goals in the game against Iona. Â The Titans had nine goals from nine different players (
Destiny Hernandez,
Gabrielle Zaretskiy,
Faith Cuevas,
Taylor Mason,
Eden Tal,
Kieran Scout Bates,
Sydney Brouwer, and Delaney WIlder).
Annabelle Sherman came up big in the cage making 13 saves while in goal for the Titans.
The Titans had to come from behind to tie twice in the first quarter with Zaretskiy, Wilder, and
Lacey Hall finding the back of the net.
The Titans and Gaels were tied 6-6 after the second quarter after both sides scored three goals. Â The Titans found goals from
Eden Tal,
Destiny Hernandez, and
Faith Cuevas.
The Titans jumped to a 8-6 lead in the third quarter with goals from Rainey and Scout Bates, however Iona scored one late in the third quarter to make it an 8-7 Titans lead after three quarters.
In th fourth quarter, Iona scored early to tie the game at 8-8. Â They also scored against very late with 13 seconds left in the game to take a 9-8 lead. Â However, Brouwer tied the game up with two seconds left to send it to overtime.
In the first period of overtime,
Shyanne Rainey found the back of the net to make it a 10-9 game. Â In the second period,
Taylor Mason scored to make it 11-9. Â The Gaels got one goal back as the Titans were able to see out the rest of the game unscathed.
