CLAREMONT, CALIF. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo team split their first day at the Claremont Convergence after beating Siena 8-6 in the first game before falling to tournament hosts Claremont Mudd Scripps 12-10 in their second game of the day.
Cal State Fullerton 8, Siena 6
The Titans defeated Siena 8-6 in the first game of the tournament.
The Titans had three goalscorers with two goals a piece in
Faith Cuevas,
Shyanne Rainey, and
Sydney Brouwer. The Titans also got goals from
Destiny Hernandez and
Taylor Mason.
Annabelle Sherman made 13 saves for the Titans in the cage to pick up the win.
The Titans scored the first goal of the game when
Destiny Hernandez opened the scoring.
Siena found an equalizer before
Faith Cuevas put the Titans back on top 2-1. The Saints however scored twice before the quarter ended and led 3-2 after one.
In the second quarter,
Shyanne Rainey scored twice to start the period to put the Titans up 4-3.
Siena got a goal back before
Sydney Brouwer scored to make it a 5-4 game. The Titans held the one goal lead at the halftime break.
The Titans opened the third quarter with goals from
Taylor Mason and
Faith Cuevas to build a 7-4 lead
Sydney Brouwer opened the scoring in the 4th period to make it 8-4. Siena would find two goals midway through the period to make it an 8-6 game. But the Titans defense was able to see off the win.
Cal State Fullerton 10, Claremont Mudd Scripps 12
The Titans couldn't hold onto a one goal lead at the start of the 4th quarter as they fell to the CMS Athenas 12-10 in their second game of the day.
Shyanne Rainey led the Titans with three goals while
Faith Cuevas had two goals in the game.
Destiny Hernandez, Gabrille Zaretskiy, and
Brittney Pino all scored for the Titans in the game.
Annabelle Sherman made seven saves in the cage.
Faith Cuevas scored twice in the first quarter as the Titans responded to the Athenas taking one goal leads over the Titans.
The Titans had to catch twice in the second period to make it a 5-5 game at the halftime break.
Shyanne Rainey tied the game at 3-3 and
Destiny Hernandez tied the game at 5-5 before the second period ended.
The Titans and Athenas traded blows in the third quarter with
Shyanne Rainey, Gabrille Zaretskiy, and
Eden Tal scored all finding the back of the net.
In the the fourth,
Shyanne Rainey scored with 7:18 left to put the Titans up 9-8. CMS went ahead at 10-9 before
Eden Tal found the equalizer for the Titans,. However, CMS cored the final two goals to close out the game.
The Titans conclude Day 2 of the Claremont Convergence on Saturday, March 2nd against Virginia Military Institute and Iona at Chapman University's Allred Aquatics Center
The first game for the Titans tomorrow is at 10:30 am and the second game is set for 2:15 pm.
