FULLERTON, Calif. – In its first midweek game of the season, Cal State Fullerton Baseball defeated LMU, 6-4, Tuesday night at Goodwin Field. With the win the Titans are now 4-3 on the year.Â
The Titans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Jakob Schardt to score Maddox Latta. For Schardt, it is his first hit and RBI since the 2022 season.Â
Fullerton added a run in the second inning when Eli Lopez hit an RBI single to left center field to drive in Cam Burdick to put the Titans up 2-0. Lopez had a strong game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. The sophomore leads the team with a .389 batting average through seven games.Â
LMU came back to take the lead in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits and a Titans defensive error which allowed a run to score.Â
The Titans quickly answered with three runs of their own in the home half of the fourth inning. Burdick led-off the inning with a double to left field. In his collegiate debut, Burdick went 3-for-3 with a run and a walk.Â
With runners on second and third, a fielding error by LMU allowed Max Ortega to score and tie the game at 3-3. One batter later, Latta singled through the left side of the infield to drive in two runs to put Fullerton up 5-3.Â
LMU scored a run in the seventh inning to cut the Titans lead to just one run, 5-4. But as they did earlier in the game and all of last season, the Titans responded in the next half inning to get the run back. Ortega recorded his first RBI of the season to bring home Draven Nushida and give the Titans a 6-4 lead.Â
In the end it was Seth Tomczak who closed out the game on the mound, giving the Titans a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to secure the victory and earn his second save of the season.Â
Freshman Payton Hawkinson got the start for the Titans. In his collegiate debut, Hawkinson pitched two shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.Â
Andrew Morones (1-0) earned the win for the Titans after giving up just one hit in 1.1 innings pitched while recording one strikeout.Â
Fullerton heads back east for the Keith LeClair Classic beginning Friday morning hosted by East Carolina. The Titans will play Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, East Carolina on Saturday and Purdue on Sunday.
