Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Titans Drop Home Contest to CSUN

FULLERTON, Calif. — Despite a game-high 26 points from DJ Brewton, Cal State Fullerton men's basketball fell 65-60 to CSUN Saturday night at Titan Gym. The loss drops the Titans to 12-16 on the season and 5-11 in Big West play.

Brewton reached 26 points on 11-of-25 shooting, knocking down a career-high four triples on seven attempts. He also had five rebounds, a pair of steals and an assist on the night. Donovan Oday filled the stat sheet with 13 points, three boards, two assists, two steals and a pair of blocks while Jalen Cooper contributed seven points and nine rebounds.

Fullerton led by as many as nine in the second half before the Matadors came back to take the game. The Titans shot 42% from the floor while holding CSUN to 38.8% shooting, including a 35% clip from three to the Matadors' 11.1%. Fullerton had 39 bench points to CSUN's five but lost the turnover battle, 17-7.

The Titans fell behind 13-4 early before a triple and transition lay-in from Brewton brought Fullerton within two, 15-13. Jalen Cooper and Oday later traded three-pointers to give the Titans their first lead of the night, 30-28. Brewton added a step-back triple from the top of the key just before the first half buzzer to put Fullerton up 33-28 at the break.

Brewton nailed a pull up jumper and Oday hammered home a one-handed slam following his own block early in the second half. Oday added a steal on the ensuing possession that led to a Brewton fast-break layup, giving the Titans a 43-34 lead.

Fullerton kept its foot on the gas, with John Mikey Square hitting a jumper and Brewton draining a trey to give Fullerton a 48-39 advantage. But CSUN fought its way back, using an 18-4 run to take a 57-52 lead with 8:16 left in the contest.

The Titans kept themselves in it, with an Oday driving layup and a pair of free throws by Square bringing Fullerton within three, 63-60, with 2:15 left. But the Titans failed to convert on their final three possessions of the game, as the Matadors came away with the 65-60 win.

Up next, Fullerton hits the road to take on Long Beach State next Thursday, Feb. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT.
