LONG BEACH, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton men's basketball outlasted Long Beach State 76-71 Thursday night on the road behind 26 points from DJ Brewton and 17 from John Mikey Square. The win improves the Titans' record to 13-16 overall and 6-11 in Big West play.Â
"Our group stayed together and continued fighting, whether it was when we had to respond to adversity or when we got ahead ourselves," Head Coach Dedrique Taylor said. "We stayed focused on what we could control. We managed to withstand (Long Beach State's) run and came out on top."
Brewton reached 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting, adding a team-high six assists and five rebounds. Square shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor and knocked down nine of his 11 free throw attempts. He also had three boards and a pair of blocks. Grayson Carper contributed 12 points and four rebounds.Â
As a team, Fullerton shot 46% from the floor while holding the Beach to a 39% shooting clip. The Titans scored 22 bench points to Long Beach's six and had 18 points off of the Beach's 13 turnovers. The win is Fullerton's first at Long Beach State since Jan. 18, 2020.Â
Holding on to a 65-64 lead with 4:22 left, Tory San Antonio found Carper for a right-wing triple to put the Titans up four. But the Beach answered with a 4-0 run to tie things up with 2:04 to go. Brewton knocked down a pair from the line before Long Beach's AJ George completed a three-point play, putting the Beach up 71-70 with 1:33 on the clock.Â
Â
Brewton continued to come up clutch from the line, hitting three of four free-throw attempts on the ensuing two offensive possessions to put Fullerton back on top, 73-71, with 41 seconds remaining. The Titans then came up with another defensive stop and Square was fouled, going one of two from the line to make it 74-71 Fullerton with 24 seconds left.Â
The Beach had one final chance to tie the game but Kendrick De Luna forced a missed Beach three-point attempt. Square then knocked down two free throws after grabbing the rebound with 15 seconds left, sealing the 76-71 Titan win.Â
Fullerton started the game off quickly, jumping to a 10-3 lead following baskets from Brewton, Square, San Antonio and Jalen Cooper. It later extended its lead to 12, 19-7, after an Antwan Robinson trey from the top of the key. The Beach came back within five before a 10-0 Titan run capped by a Carper triple from the corner made it 29-14 Fullerton. Carper hit another three later in the half as the Titans took a 34-26 lead into the locker room.
Â
It was Long Beach State that got out to a strong start in the second half, using a 14-0 run to take a 40-36 advantage. But Fullerton hung around, with triples from Brewton and Carper making it 53-50 for the Beach midway through the second period.Â
Â
Brewton found Square down low out of a Titan timeout to put Fullerton back up, 58-56, with 7:37 to go. Teams traded baskets, with Brewton hitting a layup and finding San Antonio for a trey to give Fullerton a 65-62 advantage. San Antonio then found Carper for his triple to make it 68-64 with 4:06 to go as the Titans ultimately held on, 76-71.
Up next, Fullerton returns home to take on UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Mar. 2 at Titan Gym. Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. PT.Â
