Titans Fall to No.1 UCLA to start Barbara Kalbus Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo team lost against the No. 1 UCLA Bruins 18-6 on Friday morning at the Anteater Aquatics Complex to start the 2024 Barbara Kalbus Invitational.

The Titans played the No. 1 ranked team for the second time this season after having to face USC when they were No. 1 in the opening weekend.

Destiny Hernandez and Gabrielle Zaretskiy each scored braces for the Titans while Hernandez led the Titans with 4 points after also tallying two assists.  Shyanne Rainey and Faith Cuevas also scored once each for the Titans. Annabelle Sherman made 8 saves in the cage for the Titans after playing three quarters and Haden Skye Bates made one save after playing one quarter in goal.

The Titans fell behind early 2-0 to start the game before Destiny Hernandez got a goal back for the Titans to make it 2-1.  Hernandez would add her second goal of the game with 1:42 left in the first quarter to cut the score to 5-2.  UCLA got one more before the period ended and led 6-2 after the first quarter.

The Bruins scored the first two goals of the second quarter before Faith Cuevas and Shyanne Rainey scored to make it an 8-4 game.  UCLA scored four more times in the second quarter and Gabrielle Zaretskiy scored twice in the final two minutes for the Titans. The Bruins led 12-6 after the first two periods of play.  

The third quarter was relatively silent with UCLA adding one goal to lead 13-6 heading into the final frame. The Bruins scored five times in the fourth quarter as they shutout the Titans in the second half to secure the 18-6 victory.

After playing No. 7 Arizona State and No. 1 UCLA in their last two games, the Titans will take on another ranked opponent in either No. 8 Michigan or No. 10 UC Irvine in their next match.  The Titans will play the first game tomorrow morning at 8 am at the Anteaters Aquatic Complex to start Day Two of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.  The Titans will play another match that afternoon at either 1:30 PM (with a loss) or 2:45 PM (with a win) depending on the result of the first game.
