FULLERTON, Calif. ā DJ Brewton and Tory San Antonio both scored 20 points to lift Cal State Fullerton men's basketball to a 68-50 win over Cal Poly Thursday night at Titan Gym. The win snaps a five-game losingĀ skid and improves the Titans to 12-15 on the season and 5-10 in Big West play.Ā
"I thought our group came out focused tonight," Head Coach Dedrique Taylor said. "We set the tone the way we played defense. We guarded well, we rebounded and were able to get out and score in transition."
Brewton reached 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting, adding four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. San Antonio shot 7-for-15, knocking down a career-high five three-pointers, and tallied six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Antwan Robinson added 10 points and seven boards for Fullerton.Ā
As a team, the Titans shot 40.3% from the floor, including 44.4% from three, while holding the Mustangs to 34.7% shooting. Fullerton scored 14 points off of 14 Cal Poly turnovers and outscored the Mustangs 31-5 in bench points.
Teams traded points to start the contest, with Brewton hitting a pair of midrange jumpers and Robinson hitting a three from straightaway to put Fullerton up 14-9. Brewton and San Antonio later traded triples to make it 20-16 for the Titans. Carper hit a pair of his own treys, including one following an emphatic John Mikey Square block, to give Fullerton a 26-19 advantage.Ā
Zachary Visentin completed a three-point play and Brewton added another jumper as the Titans carried a 31-19 lead into the locker room.Ā
Fullerton continued to cruise in the second half, with San Antonio hitting a three while being fouled and Brewton scoring from the baseline to put the Titans up 43-24. Brewton later got a driving layup to fall before San Antonio added another trey off a Square assist. Square then stole a Mustang pass and raced up the court for a one-handed fast-break slam while being fouled, giving Fullerton a 53-38 lead. Ā
San Antonio hit another pair of three-pointers late before Robinson nailed one of his own to make it 65-50 for the Titans. Brewton added one last triple as Fullerton came away with the 68-50 home win.Ā
