FULLERTON, Calif. - Freshman guard
Hope Hassmann scored a new career-high 23 points on Saturday as the Titans defeated UC San Diego 60-46 at Titan Gymnasium.
The Titans ended a six-game losing streak and improved to 8-16 overall and 4-10 in Big West play.
With a short handed roster, Hassmann led the Titans with 23 points and 3 assists. Â
Gabi Vidmar also added 12 points and
Kathryn Neff added 9 points. Â The Titans shot 43.8% from the floor (21-for-48) and held the Tritons to 35.6% shooting. Â The Titans outrebounded the Tritons 33-to-25 for the game. Â The Titans were 14-for-17 from the charity stripe. Â The Titans had 14 steals and forced 24 turnovers which led to 20 points.
The Titans started the game out on a 9-2 run against the Tritons. Â
Ashlee Lewis scored the first basket of the game and
Kathryn Neff hit a 3-pointer to put the Titans up seven.
However, over the final six minutes of the quarter, the Tritons went on a 9-1 run themselves to take an 11-10 lead over the Titans after the end of the first quarter.
The Titans outscored the Tritons 21-to-16 in the second quarter. Â The Tritons built a 5-point lead at 19-14 before the Titans began chipping back. Â The Titans responded with a 12-0 run with
Hope Hassmann scoring 8 points on two three-pointers and
Demonnie Lagway and
Eva Levingston scoring layups.
The Titans built a 9-point lead at 31-22 before the Tritons were able to get a layup and three free throws at the death of the quarter to make it a 4-point (31-27) lead for the Titans going into halftime.
The Tritons were hot to start the third quarter after going on a 13-5 run to start the quarter and led 40-36 with 5:20 left in the third. Â The Titans were able to regain momentum after
Aixchel Hernandez scored two layups and Hassmann and Levingston made three free throws to restore the Titan lead at 43-40.
The Titans carried a 47-44 lead after the third quarter after holding the Tritons to four points over the final five minutes of the third period.
In the fourth quarter, the Titans outscored the Tritons by 11 points (13-to-2) after holding UCSD to just two points on 1-for-12 shooting. Â The Tritons scored the first basket of the 4th period with 7:39 left and didn't score again the rest of the game. Â Hassmann scored seven of the Titans 13 points in the fourth quarter.
After Saturday's win, the Titans remain in 10th place behind Cal State Bakersfield (5-10) and Long Beach State (5-9). Â The Titans will play two games on the road next week against Cal Poly and CSUN. Â The Titans will take on the Mustangs on Thursday with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m.
