FULLERTON, Calif. — Despite a career-high 30 points from DJ Brewton, Cal State Fullerton men's basketball fell 76-69 to UC San Diego Saturday evening on the road. The loss drops the Titans to 11-15 overall and 4-10 in Big West play.Â
Brewton reached 30 points on 14-of-24 shooting to go with eight rebounds and six assists, both game-highs. He bested his previous Fullerton career-high scoring output of 23 points set on Dec. 9 at Sacramento State. Donovan Oday followed with 10 points, two assists and a pair of rebounds while Grayson Carper had nine points and three boards. Â
UCSD jumped out to an 11-5 lead before Brewton and Oday traded driving transition layups. Brewton drained a stepback jumper and a runner in the lane to later make it 21-17 for the Tritons. Brewton hit another pair of midrange jumpers later in the first half but UCSD took a 39-23 advantage into the locker room.Â
The Tritons extended their lead to 19, 49-30, six minutes into the second half. But Fullerton answered with a 10-2 run highlighted by threes from Carper and Antwan Robinson to make it 51-40 for UCSD. Teams then traded baskets, with baskets from Brewton and Vincent Lee and a Tory San Antonio triple bringing the score to 62-49 for the Tritons.Â
The Titans narrowed the deficit in the closing minutes, with a pair of treys from Brewton and an Oday layup bringing Fullerton within six, 72-66, with two minutes left. Oday then knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 72-68 for UCSD with 1:10 to go. But that was as close as the Titans would come, as the Tritons hit four free throws down the stretch to seal their 76-69 win.Â
Up next, Fullerton returns home for a pair of contests next week at Titan Gym. The Titans will first take on Cal Poly on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7:00 p.m. PT.Â
