Titans Sweep Doubleheader Against Stanford on Opening Day

STANFORD, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton Baseball swept the doubleheader against Stanford Friday at Sunken Diamond to clinch the weekend series victory. The Titans open the season with a 2-0 record.

Game One, 4-0

In his first game on the mound in nearly two years, Christian Rodriguez tossed a gem for the Titans. Rodriguez pitched six shutout innings while giving up just three hits, walking three batters and striking out two.

After the first six batters of the game were retired in order, the Titans offense came to life in the top of the third inning.

Eli Lopez led-off the inning being hit by a pitch before Jack Haley reached on an infield bunt base hit to give Fullerton runners on first and second.

With one out on the board, Moises Guzman ripped a double to left field to drive in Lopez and Haley to give the Titans a 2-0 lead. One batter later, Draven Nushida recorded his first career RBI to extend the Titans lead to 3-0.

Fullerton extended its lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning on an RBI double by first-year Titan Matthew Bardowell to drive in Nushida from second base.

Peyton Jones earned the save after pitching the final three innings of the game. Jones gave up just one hit while walking two and striking out four batters.

Game Two, 15-6

The Titans set the tone early in game one, scoring two runs on three doubles in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Fullerton went onto score in eight of the nine innings while recording nine extra base hits.

Freshman Marcos Rosales got the offense going with a one-out double for his first collegiate hit. Maddox Latta followed it up with a double of his own to drive in Rosales and put the Titans on the board. With two outs on the board, Colby Wallace doubled to right field to bring home Latta and make it a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, freshman Tyler Holley led-off the inning with a walk before moving over to third on a stolen base and a productive infield out. Haley drove Holley in a sacrifice fly to put the Titans up 3-0.

With the Titans leading 3-1 in the top of the third inning, Colby Wallace crushed a three-run home run off the scoreboard in right center field to extend the lead to 6-1. Wallace went 3-for-6 with one run and four RBI.

After a one-out single by Rosales, Matthew Bardowell doubled to right center field to bring home Rosales and extend the lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning.

Fullerton really opened up the game with a five-run fifth inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Haley singled through the left side of the infield to drive in a run and put the Titans up 8-1. One batter later, Nushida hit a bases clearing triple to right field to make it an 11-1 game. With one out, Latta capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 12-1.

Stanford responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to cut into the Titans lead, 12-4. With a runner on third and two outs, the Titans turned to Jason Blood out of the bullpen who quickly got the third out to end the inning and not let the Cardinal gain any more momentum.

Blood gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits while walking one and striking out two in two innings of work.

After Fullerton's only scoreless inning of the game in the sixth, it went on to score one run in the seventh, eighth and ninth inning.

In the seventh it was a productive fielder's choice by Bardowell to score Nushida from third. In the eighth, the Titans plated a run on an RBI double off the wall by Max Ortega to bring home Holley, and in the ninth Rosales hit his first collegiate home run to put the Titans up 15-6.

Rosales had an eye-opening debut, going 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs, an RBI, a double and a home run.

In the bottom half of the seventh inning with the score 13-6, Seth Tomczak came on in relief and got the Titans out of bases loaded jam to not allow Stanford to get back in the game. Tomczak pitched 2.1 shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out five batters on his way to earning the win.

Saturday's game has been officially canceled. The two teams will meet for the third and final game of the series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.
