Titans Fall Short At Home Versus Hawai’i

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton men's basketball team fell 76-68 to Hawai'i Thursday night at home. The loss drops the Titans' overall record to 11-11 and 4-6 in Big West play.

DJ Brewton led the Titans in scoring, tallying a team-high 19 points on 7-of-13 from the floor. Tory San Antonio added 13 points, shooting 3-of-7 overall and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. John Mikey Square grabbed a game-high-tying six rebounds while also contributing seven points.

The Rainbow Warriors got off to a quick start, producing a 16-4 lead before DJ Brewton stole the ball and took an open lane to the basket to slow Hawaii's momentum. A pair of three-pointers from Grayson Carper and Donovan Oday later cut Fullerton's deficit, 31-20. A steal from Oday then led to a Brewton lay-in to cap an 11-0 Titan run. The Rainbow Warriors led 36-24 at the half.

Coming out of the break Hawai'i continued its momentum, scoring four early points to lead 40-24. Teams traded baskets until Kendrick De Luna later produced a layup and hook shot on back-to-back possessions to bring the score to 59-44 for Hawai'i. Square then forced a turnover that led to a Carper three-pointer and cut Fullerton's deficit to 10, 59-49.

A Brewton triple brought the Titans within seven, 66-59, with 3:15 to go. But that was as close as Fullerton would get as the Rainbow Warriors managed to keep Fullerton at bay, ultimately holding on for the 76-68 win.

The Titans return to action next Thursday, Feb. 8, to face UC Davis on the road. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PT.
