FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team fell to San Diego State 61-58 on Wednesday night at Titan Gym in another close game for the Titans.
The Aztecs improved to 10-1 for the season while the Titans dropped to 0-10. The Titans once again hung in there until the very end but couldn't come up with the big shot.Â
The Aztecs went ahead 61-58 with 25 seconds left in the game.  The Titans turned over their first possession but were able to foul an Aztec player who missed both free throws to keep it a 3-point game. On their second attempt, the Titans drew up a play for
Madelynn Muniz in the corner but her shot was tipped by an Aztec defender. The Titans fouled the rebounder and once again the Aztecs missed both free throws. Â With 4 seconds left,
Aaliyah Stanton dribbled their length of the floor but her 3-point attempt hit off the backboard clanged off the rim to prevent the Titans from going to overtime.
The winless Titans outplayed or at least matched the effort of the one-loss Aztecs for the whole game. The Titans outshot the Aztecs 37.7% to 34.8% for the game.  The Aztecs connected on six three pointers while the Titans were only able to make 2 three-pointers.  The Titans shot 71.4% from the free throw Line (10-14) while the Aztecs shot 69.2% from the line (9-13).  The Titans outrebounded the Aztecs 43-to-40 for the game.  The Titans had two more turnovers than the Aztecs (14-to-12) which led to 15 points for the Aztecs on turnovers and just 10 for the Titans.
The Titans had three players in double figures in scoring as
Demonnie Lagway,
Eva Levingston, and
Aaliyah Stanton scored 12 points each. Â
Eva Levingston picked up the second double-double of her career with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Â
Aixchel Hernandez came just short of a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds.  The Aztecs had two players with 17 points in in Naomi Panganiban and Adryana Quezada.

Layla Davis hit a basket to give the Titans a 10-9 lead with 2:39 left in the first quarter.  The Aztecs went on a 8-0 run after forcing a couple Titan turnovers during their full court press aned led 17-10.
Demonnie Lagway made a basket for the Titans to make it a 17-12 game after the first quarter.

The Titans quickly made up the difference to start the second quarter and brought it back to a one possession game.Â
Eva Levingston made three straight baskets and scored 10 of her 12 points in the quarter. Â

The Aztecs opened up a 8-point and 7-point lead during the quarter but the Titans hung tough in there. Â After going down 28-20, the Titans brought it back to a 1-point game at 31-30. Â
Madelynn Muniz hit a 3-pointer and Lagway made a layup to keep the Titans within striking distance. Â After the first half, the Aztecs led 36-33.

The Titans continued to play strong in the third quarter after outscoring the Aztecs 15-to-13. Â
Aaliyah Stanton made three straight baskets to keep the Titans close and
Emily Strachan made a layup with 3:09 left to tie the game at 44-44.

Layla Davis made back-to-back layups to give the Titans their first lead since the first quarter at 1:10.Â

The Aztecs took the lead 49-48 on a half court third quarter ending buzzer beater three-pointer from Naomi Panganiban which ultimately proved to be the difference in the scoreline at the end.
In the fourth quarter, the Aztecs kept trying to pull away from the Titans and stretched their lead to 5 points twice in the quarter but the Titans didn't fade away. Â
Demonnie Lagway hit a big-three pointer to put the Titans back in and make it a 53-51 game.

The Titans made it a one-point game with 43 seconds left at 59-58 after
Aaliyah Stanton made a layup. The Titans got a stop on the other end but the Aztecs got a crucial offensive rebound which led to a foul and free throws for the Aztecs.  Erin Houpt made both of them to give the Aztecs a 3-point lead at 61-58.  The Titans couldn't capitalize on three opportunities down the stretch to tie the game and at least send it to overtime.
The Titans will look to pick up their first win of the season as they host Chapman on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. against the Panthers. Â
