XC Men Finish Second, Women Ninth at Big West Championships

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton men's cross country finished second while the Titan women took ninth place Saturday morning at The Big West Cross Country Championships. 

The second-place finish is the Titan men's program's seventh top-three finish in the last eight conference championships. 

Talman Young led Fullerton's men's squad in the 8k with a personal-best 24:00.7 to finish seventh individually. Tony Chavez joined Young in the top-ten after running a 24:02.3 to finish ninth, earning both of them a spot on the Men's Cross Country All-Big West Team. 

Marco Perez finished 11th with a time of 24:03.0, while Nathaniel Avila took 23rd with a 24:32.1. Justin Singer (25th, 24:34.1), Jonathan Pfeiffer (26th, 24:37.2) and JT McCoy (29th, 24:39.3) secured top-30 finishes in the race. 

Luke Hitchcock became the 33rd runner to cross the finish line, clocking a 24:43.2. Jaden Wiley (50th, 25:08.7) and Logan Harris (58th, 25:18.9) rounded out the Titans scoring runners. 

As a team, the men's squad earned 73 points to finish second. Cal Poly defended their title, winning the meet with 22 total points while UC Davis took bronze with 82 points.

Nanette Novak ran a 21:02.5 in the women's 6k, leading the Titans with a 27th-place finish. Bella Smith (29th, 21:03.7) followed a second behind Novak, joining her as the only other top-30 Titan runner. 

Ashlynn Viramontes finished the women's 6k in 40th place with a time of 21:13.3. Elena Martinez (67th, 22:05.8), Shandy Moore (71st, 22:13.5), Natalie Maahs (74th, 22:19.9), Natalyn Membreno (76th, 22:30.6) and Grace Toriz (78th, 22:36.1) came within the first 80 Big West long distance runners to complete the race. 

Sophia Ebiner ran a 22:59.4, placing 84th, and Destiny Lopez clocked a 23:06.5 to conclude the team's scoring finishers in 88th place. 

Fullerton's women's squad earned 207 total points to claim ninth place. Cal Poly won the competition with 33 points and UC Davis followed with 70. UC Irvine took third with 96 points. 

The Titans now turn their attention to the NCAA West Regionals, which will take place on Friday, Nov. 15, in Colfax, Washington.
