Titans Fall to CSUN in Five Sets

Lyla Traylor led Titans with 16 Kills and 18 Digs in first five set match of the season

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball fell to CSUN (6-9, 1-3) after forcing five sets (25-19, 23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 11-15) for the first time this season. This marked the first time the Titans have seen five sets (L, 2-3) since Nov. 4, 2023 at UC Davis. Women's Volleyball stands 4-10 on the season and remains in search for their first conference win. 

The Titans posted a .218 team hitting percentage with 58 kills and 23 total attacks. Lyla Traylor led the Titans with 16 kills and 18 digs, while Mya Tillman led with 27 assists and five aces. 

Ketesia Hall kicked off the scoring with a kill assisted by Ryleigh Garis. Lolo Fonua kept pace with Hall, putting the Titans up 2-0. CSUN scored the next three points with three kills of their own for a 3-2 lead.  Fullerton responded with a 6-0 scoring run to retake the lead 8-3, highlighted by Ameena Campbell's go-ahead kill. 



Fullerton remained on top until CSUN tied the set at 18-18 on an attacking error by Bianca Martinez. The Matadors recorded a 5-0 scoring run to take the first set from the Titans, 25-19. 

Captains Martinez and Traylor posted a block to retake a 16-15 lead over the Matadors, who tied the set at 16-16 on a kill. Laura Williams retook and secured Fullerton's lead in the second set with two kills sandwiched by a Hall service ace. The Titans evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 set win. 



The Titans hit their best (.375) in the third set, recording 14 kills and 32 total attacks. Campbell extended Fullerton's lead to 20-16 with a kill set up by Garis. The Matadors defeated the Titans, 25-23, on a 7-0 scoring run to lead the match, 2-1. 

Fullerton started the fourth set strong, going on a 6-0 run highlighted by four service aces by Tillman. Fonua started the scoring on a kill. The Titans carried the momentum through the end of the set, recording 12 kills. Six attacking errors by the Matadors aided the Titans in securing a 25-18 set win. 

The Titans and Matadors battled through four ties in the fifth set before coming up short four points. All three of Fullerton's kills in the fifth set were awarded to Traylor, while six of the 11 Fullerton points came on CSUN attacking errors. CSUN found the last three points of the match, securing a 3-2 match win over the Titans in a 15-11 fifth set. 

The Titans continue this home stretch against UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Cal Poly on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
