Titans Fight Hard, Fall to UC Riverside in Five Sets

Aubrey Beaver posts 12 kills, 28 digs in reverse sweep

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball dropped a hard-fought, five set match to UC Riverside (25-20, 25-16, 17-25, 20-25) on Thursday night after taking the first two sets from the Highlanders. Titans stand 4-15 on the season and 0-9 in conference play. 

The Titans took the lead early in the first set by the score of 3-2, with Mya Tillman assisting on two of those. The Highlanders went on a big run extending their lead to 12-7. Ameena Cambpell cut the lead to 12-8 with her third kill of the set before the Titans then went on a 7-0 run to take a 14-13 lead. Aubrey Beaver got her first kill of the set to give the Titans a 20-18 lead, which ended in a first set win for the Titans, 25-20. 



After being all tied up at 3-3 in the second set, Lolo Fanua gave the Titans the lead with a kill assisted by Lyla Traylor. Traylor also had two kills in the set. Traylor and Fonua posted back-to-back kills to give the Titans a 11-8 lead. Fullerton kept it rolling after a Kylie Griffin kill set up by Ryleigh Garis. Beaver had a big block to give the Titans a 20-13 lead. Beaver would give the Titans a 2-0 set lead with a kill from Tillman 25-16.

The Titans got their scoring started in the third set with a Fonua kill to give them the early lead. The Highlanders took a 8-3 lead before Fullerton would cut the lead with the help of Traylor to 8-6. Traylor blocked a shot in the middle of the set to cut the Titan deficit to four. The Highlanders stopped the Titans from a potential sweep, winning set three 25-17. 

After going back and forth to start the fourth set, the Titans tied the score at four with a Fonua kill. They took a 5-4 lead in the set after a Garis ace. Garis collected her team-leading 18th assist in the fourth set with the help of a Laura Williams kill. The Titans tied it back up at 14-14 on a kill by Beaver. Nia Cummings gave the Titans a 18-17 lead during the set before the Highlanders found an 8-2 scoring run to force a deciding set. 

Bianca Martinez tied the fifth set up at 2-2 with a kill assisted by Garis. Beaver picked up another kill in the set tying the game at 5-5 once again. Leilani Lopez passed the ball to Traylor to give the Titans a one point lead. After being tied nine times in the final set, the Highlanders took a 12-11 lead causing Fullerton to take a timeout. After having five more ties in the set the Titans fell in the set 21-19.

The Titans travel to UC Davis this weekend for a conference match-up on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
