FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans men's water polo team almost had one of their best signature wins under head coach
Kyle Witt but couldn't hold onto a lead late as they fell against No. 16 LMU 14-11 at home at the Titans Aquatic Center on Wednesday evening.Â
The Titans led by three goals with 3:56 left in the third but were outscored 9-to-3 against the Lions over the final 12 minutes of the game.Â
Julian Nichols led the Titans with 6 points after scoring three goals and tallying three assists. Â
Nico D'Angelo and
Togan Ozbek each had multi-goal games along with one assist. Â
Jacob Hatch had one goal and two assists in the game.Â
The Titans scored the first goal of the game when
Togan Ozbek opened the scoring in the first quarter. Â Each time, Lions would tie it up, the Titans went ahead as
Jacob Hatch and
Will Johnson also scored in the first quarter.
The Titans scored just one goal in the second quarter as Julian NIchols scored his first of the game to put the Titans up 4-2. Â However, the Lions tied the game at 4-4 before heading into the halftime break.
The Titans had their best scoring output in the third quarter as they scored five goals in the quarter. Â
Togan Ozbek opened the scoring in the second half to make it 5-4.
After LMU tied the game at 5-5, the Titans got three straight goals from
Nico D'Angelo,
Julian Nichols, and
Alec Isaacman to open up a three goal lead at 8-5.
However, LMU scored twice before the period ended and Nichols scored his third goal of the game to make it a 9-7 lead for the Titans at the end of the third.
LMU scored twice to start the fourth period to take their first lead of the game at 10-9 with 6:09 left in the fourth quarter. Â
Nico D'Angelo and
Ethan Cooney were able to score to keep it tied at 11-11.
 However, LMU scored on their final three possessions to take the game, 14-11.
After having a couple games at home the Titans will be back on the road this weekend as they take part in the Gary Troyer Tournament. Â They will take on Biola and Westcliff on Friday at Chapman. Â They will tkae on Concordia on Saturday at Claremont and Ottawa in La Verne. Â
