IRVINE, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team lost 3-1 on the road at UC Irvine on Thursday at the Anteater Soccer Field.
The Titans fell to 4-9-3 overall in the season and 2-3-2 in Big West play. After Thursday's league results, the Titans are tied with CSUN for seventh place with 8 points in the table. The Titans need to be in at least sixth place to qualify for the Big West Tournament preliminary round.Â
The game started off with the Titans in control of possession and play as they attacked the UC Irvine goal. The Titans scored the first goal of the game in the 16th minute as
Kaylin Raibon netted her first goal of the season. After
Kaylee Noble dribbled past a defender down the sideline, she whipped in a cross to Raibon who headed it past the UCI keeper to make it 1-0.Â
After the Titans held a 4-1 shot advantage, UCI struck back in the 29th minute on the first of two goals of the night from Emilie Castagna.  After a poor clearance effort from the Titans defense, Castagna drilled a shot that hugged the inside of the left post to make it a 1-1 game. Both sides went into halftime with the score tied at 1-1.
UCI scored right at the start of the second half after Castagna had an open header on a corner kick in the 46th minute. Â From then on, UCI held much of the advantage as they rattled off 8 shots before the Titans got their first shot attempt in the second half in the 73rd minute from
Isabella Cruz. Â
Cruz had another shot saved before the Anteaters scored the dagger on a free kick goal from Mihaela Perez who scored from nearly 40 yards out after catching the Titans goalkeeper off their line. Â The Titans had their best chance to score a late goal in the 82nd minute as
Kaylee Noble had a shot saved and
Gracie Paton,
Graci Raymond, and
Makenna McGill each had a shot inside the box that was blocked by the UCI defense. Â
The Titans will look to right the ship and move up the table as they head to Long Beach State on Sunday. Â Kick-off is set for 5:00 p.m. at George Allen Field.
