Titans Drop Home Contest vs Cal Poly

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball fell 68-55 at home against Cal Poly on Thursday night at Titan Gym.

The Titans dropped to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in Big West Conference play.

The Titans had two players in double figures on offense as Fujika Nimmo had 16 points.  Ashlee Lewis picked up her third double-double of the season and second consecutive double-double after scoring 13 points along with hauling down 10 boards.  The Titans shot 34.5% from the floor (21-for-55) while the Mustangs shot an efficient 58.5& from the floor.  The three-point shot wasn't dropping for the Titans as they were 3-for-15 from beyond the arc.  The Titans hauled in 12 offensive rebounds but it led to only three second chance points.  The Titans also forced 18 turnovers but couldn't convert the advantage into extra offense.

The Titans played their best basketball in the first quarter as they led 19-12 after the first 10 minutes.  The Titans opened the game with a 6-0 lead before the Mustangs got their first bucket.  The Titans kept their six point advantage after an Ashlee Lewis layup and another Hassmann jumper.  Cal Poly closed to within two points before the Titans went on a 5-0 run to close the period after Fujika Nimmo drilled back-to-back jumpers.

In the second quarter the ball was not falling the Titans way as the Mustangs started the quarter on a 14-2 run.  The Titans finally got their second and third baskets of the period in the final 1:12 as Ashlee Lewis made a layup and Hope Hassmann made a buzzer beater layup after Allysan Tse blocked a Mustangs shot on the other end.

The Titans went into halftime with some momentum, only trailing by three, at 28-25.

The Titans continued to keep things close in the third quarter to start the period after Gabi Vidmar hit a three pointer to make it a 1-point game with 7:36 left.

However, the Mustangs went on a 8-0 run before Hope Hassmann drilled a deep three from the wing.

The Mustangs extended their lead to 10 points once again before the Titans chipped back before the period ended.  Gabi Vidmar hit a three-pointer and Aixchel Hernandez hit a turnaround jumper to bring the Titans within 5 points at 46-41 to close out the third quarter.

Fujika Nimmo started the Titans off on the right foot in the fourth quarter after scoring a layup on an And 1 play.

However, Cal Poly quickly made six points to restore a 8 point lead over the Titans. Aixchel Hernandez made a layup to keep the Titans within six points at 6:53 left.  However, the Titans offense couldn't make their baskets down the stretch and Cal Poly was able to pull away further after the Titans were forced to foul towards the final few minutes.

The Titans will look to right the ship as they head to Bakersfield on Saturday to take on the Roadrunners.  Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM at the Icardo Center.
