ISLA VISTA, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball fell in four sets (20-25, 25-23, 17-25, 19-25) to UC Santa Barbara on the road Friday night. The result moves the Titans' record to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in Big West play.Â
Ameena Campbell guided Fullerton with a career-high 19 kills while also adding nine digs and three blocks. Aubrey Beaver posted 11 kills and 10 digs, while Ryleigh Garis also tallied a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs.Â
The Titans hung tough in the first set, taking a 17-16 advantage following kills from Campbell, Laura Williams and Beaver. UCSB responded with a 4-0 run before another Williams kill stopped the bleeding momentarily. The Gauchos, though, went on to win the first set, 25-20.Â
In set number two, Fullerton seized control early with a Beaver kill and service ace giving the Titans a 10-6 lead. UCSB came back to tie things up at 19, but a pair of Campbell kills fueled a 4-1 Titan run to give Fullerton a 23-20 advantage. Campbell and Aaliyah Fasavalu stuffed a Gaucho attack to bring it to set point, and Campbell finished off the set with a kill, tying the match at 1-1.Â
After falling behind early in the third set, Beaver powered home a kill and an ace to bring the Titans within three, 14-11. UCSB scored the next four to go up 18-11, and the last five of the frame to take a 2-1 match lead.Â
In the fourth set, a dump kill from Garis and another score from Bianca Martinez fueled a 4-0 run to give Fullerton a 13-12 lead. The Gauchos, though, then used a 10-1 run to go up 22-14. The Titans hung tough, with kills from Campbell and Williams highlighting a 3-0 run late in the set. But UCSB went on to take the set, 25-19, to seal the win.Â
The Titans return to the court tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 30, when they take on Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT.Â
