SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team won their first Big West game of the season after defeating the Cal Poly Mustangs 2-1 on Thursday evening at Mustang Memorial Field.
The Titans were led by freshman forward
Kaylee Noble who's second half brace paced the Titans over the Mustangs. The Titans picked up their first win over the Mustangs and in San Luis Obispo since 2019.
"I'm very impressed with our women tonight, said head Coach
Demian Brown." " We've done something that is extremely hard to do in the Big West Conference, which is to come to Cal Poly and get a win. I felt that we executed our game plan extremely well in both halves and I was very excited for
Kaylee Noble to get her first two goals of the season, two of which I'm sure many in the future are to come."
In the first half Cal Poly dominated the stat sheet with an 11-to-2 shot advantage, however the Titans had the ball numerous times in the Mustang's final third but only had two shots to show for it.
In the second half, the Titans came out hungry and scored two goals within the first 15 minutes of the half.In the 47th minute,
Isabella Cruz stole the ball off a Mustangs player and pushed the ball wide to Noble who slotted it past the onrushing goalkeeper for the freshman Noble's first career goal.
The Titans press paid off again 12 minutes later when Cruz once again intercepted the ball at midfield. Â She passed it forward to
Makenna McGill who threaded the ball forward to Noble down the right sideline. Â Noble had a perfect shot rip across the goal to the keeper's far corner for her second goal of the game.
The Titans defense dealt with Cal Poly's 22 shots easily for most of the night. Â
Mia Ranson was credited with 9 saves for the game including a game-saving stop in the 71st minute after stopping a point blank header with Cal Poly.
It wasn't a perfect night for the Titans as the Mustangs got a late consolation goal in the 90th minute after a defensive breakdown in the box. Â But the Titans were able to see out the ensuing kick-off and keep the ball away from their half for the remaining minute of play.
The Titans moved to 3-4-6, 1-1-2 in conference play after Thursday's night victory.
The Titans will head to UC Santa Barbara on Sunday to conclude their two game road trip. Kick-off is set for 12 PM at Harder Stadium.
