FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball was swept 3-0 (15-25, 24-26, 21-25) by UC Riverside Saturday at Titan Gym. The Titans' overall record now moves to 1-10 and 0-2 in conference play.
Ameena Campbell led Fullerton with a .205 clip and match-high 15 kills.
Aubrey Beaver followed with a near double-double with nine kills and 12 digs. Beaver also produced a game-high four service aces, including three in a row in the third set.
The Titans got off to a slow start in the first set, allowing UCR to take an early 5-1 lead. Multiple attack errors from UCR allowed the Titans to respond with their own 5-1 run to bring the score level at 6-6.
A 4-0 run from the Highlanders extended their lead and the Titans were unable to close. Fullerton trailed the remainder of the frame, eventually losing the first set, 25-15.
Fullerton started the second set with a strong start, taking an early 4-1 lead. However, UCR responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead, 8-4. The Titans bounced back with an 8-2 scoring run to cut UCR's lead and bring the set within two points, 16-14. A kill by Campbell and an attack error by the Highlanders brought the set level, 16-16.
The two teams traded points eventually leading to a 24-24 tied score. A service ace and attack error secured UCR's second set win, 26-24.
With their backs against the wall, the Titans' Beaver produced three service aces in a row en route to an early 8-1 Titan lead. A timeout put the Titans early momentum to a hold and the Highlanders were able to get back into the match. Later tied 19-19, the two teams once again found themselves level.
A late 5-2 run solidified UCR's win, 25-21, and the match sweep.
Next the Titans will face UC Santa Barbara on the road on Sep. 29th at 7:00 p.m. PT.
