Fernandez, Chavez Lead XC at Dellinger Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Jicel Fernandez and Tony Chavez each recorded personal bests in their respective races to pace Cal State Fullerton cross country Friday at the Bill Dellinger Invitational. 

Fernandez clocked a time of 21:14.9 to finish 35th in the women's 6k, cutting down her personal best by nearly five seconds. Mia Bergman raced a 21:21.6 to finish 44th, while Destiny Lopez ran a 21:53.3 in her first collegiate 6k race. 

Olivia Ruiz finished 78th with a time of 22:00.1, with Nanette Novak following closely behind with a 22:00.6 to place 80th and round out the Titans' scoring finishers. Fullerton's women's squad finished ninth with a total of 244 points. Big West foe Cal Poly placed third while UC Riverside took fifth. 

Chavez raced a 24:30.4 in the men's 8K, beating his previous best by nearly seven seconds, to finish 37th overall and lead the Titan men's squad. Talman Young followed with a time of 24:37.0, placing 42nd, while Alexis Garcia took 50th with a 24:46.7. 

Nathaniel Avila (62nd, 24:54.3) and Justin Singer (63rd, 24:56.6) also posted sub-25 minute times, rounding out the Titans' scoring runners. As a team, Fullerton placed 10th with 201 total points. Big West foe Cal Poly won the meet while UC Riverside took third. 

The Titans now turn their focus to the Highlander Invitational, which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 14, at UC Riverside.
