Titans Split Bank of Hawaii Classic After Defeating San Francisco

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team defeated the University of San Francisco Dons 54-48 on Sunday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Titans move to 2-2 for the season.

Hope Hassmann scored another new career-high after leading the Titans with 22 points on 7-13 shooting.  Ashlee Lewis had a new career high 16 rebounds and chipped in with 6 points and 3 blocks.

Both sides shot below 30% for the game as the Titans shot 29% (17-for-58) and the Dons shot 28% (19-for-67).  The Titans got 15 points from free throws while the Dons got just 5 points.

The Titans started off the first quarter hot after taking a 13-2 lead.  The Titans led from the start after Gabi Vidmar made a free throw.  The Titans scored four straight three pointers with two from Hope Hassmann, one from Demonnie Lagway, and one from Kathryn Neff.  The Titans would stretch their lead to 19-8 after the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Titans came out cold as they were 0-9 to start the period.  The Dons got within one point at 19-18 before Hope Hassmann made the first bucket for the Titans in the quarter with a three pointer with 2:05 left in the period.  Hassmann would add two more buckets before the period ended to give the Titans a 26-18 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, the Dons once again had the early momentum as they scored seven straight points to start the period to make it a 26-25 game.  Hope Hassmann drilled two free throws for the first Titans points of the period with 7:33 left in the quarter.  The Dons ended up taking their first lead of the game with 1:50 left in the third quarter.  The Dons led 37-36 after three periods after outscoring the Titans 19-10 in the period.

In the fourth quarter, the Titans were able to avoid the slow starts like their second and third quarter.  After a layup by the Dons to start the period, the Titans went on a 10-0 run to take a 46-39 lead with 4:31 left in the game.  The Dons got to within three points with 2:03 left in the game but the Titans got free throws by Brielle Minor and Hassmann to put them up by six with 21 seconds left in the game. Jasmine Gayles sank a 3-pointer for the Dons with 15 seconds left but the Titans made 3-of-4 free throws at the end from Hassmann and Ruby Macdonald to ice the game and preserve the win.

The Titans will now head home for two straight games after spending their first four games on the road.  The Titans will host Georgetown on Sunday, November 26th for their home opener with tip-off set for 2:00 PM.  The Titans will take on San Jose State on Wednesday, November 29th.
