SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team won their first game of the 23-24 season after defeating the Sacramento State Hornets 61-51 on Sunday afternoon at the Nest.
The Titans (1-1) improved to 9-2 all time against the Hornets and avenged last year's loss that took place in Titan Gym.
The Titans offense was spread around for the game with nine of eleven players who saw action score at least a field goal. Â Kathryn Neff led the Titans with 11 points after shooting 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Â Demonnie Lagway had 10 points after going a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Neither side shot particularly well with the Titans shooting 35% and the Hornets shooting 32%. Â The Titans forced 18 turnovers and scored 12 points off turnovers. The Titans had 15 assists on their 19 field goals while the Hornets had just 9 assists on their 17 field goals.
The Titans led for almost the entire game except for the first 1:48 of the game where the game was tied. Â The Titans took a 15-7 lead after the first quarter. Â The Titans stretched their lead from the first quarter to a 14-point lead with 2:17 left in the first half after a three pointer by
Kathryn Neff. Â However, a technical foul after a steal by
Eva Levingston led to a free throw and a three-point play on the Hornets next possession by Ayanna Jackson cut the lead to single digits heading into halftime. Â The Titans and Hornets both scored 15 points a piece in the third quarter. The Hornets cut the lead to 4 points towards the end of the third quarter but free throws by
Ashlee Lewis and an alley oop by
Kaliana Salazar-Harrell extended the lead back to eight points.
The Titans were able to stretch the lead back to 14 points to start the fourth quarter. The Hornets got to within 6 points with 1:53 left after going on a 7-0 run but an
Eva Levingston layup after an out of bounds play sealed the win for the Titans.
The Titans will return home before flying out to Hawaii for the Bank of Hawaii Classic next weekend. Â The Titans will square off against the University of San Francisco and the University of Idaho at the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawai'i.
