FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball fell in four sets (25-23, 17-25, 22-25, 14-25) to Hawaii Saturday at Titan Gym. With this loss the Titans' record moves to 1-24 on the season and 0-16 in the conference.
Freshman Aubrey Beaver led the Titans offensively, with 15 kills on a .270 clip while also contributing five digs. Following her was Lyla Traylor who produced a double-double with 12 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Ameena Campbell followed close behind with a near double-double on 13 kills and nine digs.
The first set began with Hawaii taking an early lead, 3-0. Despite this the Titans didn't allow the set to get away from them with a kill by Lyla Traylor, a service ace by Ryleigh Garis and an attack error bringing the score back to 8-8.
The Titans were able to get their first lead of the set after a kill by Aubrey Beaver set off a 5-0 run to give the Titans a 13-9 lead. The two teams continued to trade points with a 4-0 run for Hawaii leveling the score, 15-15.
Late in the set, the Titans were able to pull away, once again, after kills by Bianca Martinez and Traylor and an attack error gave them a 20-16 lead. The Rainbow Wahine attempted to get back into the set but a kill by Beaver secured the Titans set win, 25-23.
The second set started with the two teams trading points before the Rainbow Wahine put together a 3-0 run to pull away with the lead 9-4. A kill by Campbell kicked off a late 3-0 run for the Titans but they were unable to close the scoring gap. Hawaii secured the set win, 25-17.
The back and forth continued as the two teams found themselves tied 5-5 to start the third set. The Rainbow Wahine attempted to pull away but the Titans remained persistent. A kill by Martinez brought CSUF back into the match 12-10. Hawaii held onto the lead but a kill by Martinez, an attack error and a service ace by Beaver cut Hawaii's lead to 22-20 late in the set. The Rainbow Wahine closed out the set 25-22.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the fourth set hot, taking an early 6-0 lead. Martinez emerged late in the set to produce three kills to cut the Rainbow Wahine's lead to 23-13. Hawaii closed out the set,25-15 and earned the match win.
Fullerton will be on the road on Friday, Nov. 17 to face Cal State Bakersfield. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. PT.
