FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton's women's volleyball was swept (25-18, 25-22, 25-16) by UC Santa Barbara Saturday at Titan Gym. With the loss the Titans' overall record moves to 1-20 and 0-12 in the conference.
Ameena Campbell paced the Titans with seven kills and five digs. Following her was Lyla Traylor and Aubrey Beaver with six kills apiece. Traylor also contributed eight digs while Beaver had five. Ryleigh Garis has a team-high four service aces to go with 16 assists.
Nadia Koanui led the Titans defensively with a team-high 11 digs while also contributing two assists and one service ace.
UCSB opened the match with a 3-0 run to take an early lead. Kills by Traylor and Beaver closed the scoring gap to 4-3, but the Gauchos continued to be persistent. A 5-0 run by the Titans was highlighted by three consecutive service aces by Garis to bring the score to 14-12. Despite this, CSUF spent the remainder of the set trailing, eventually losing the first set, 25-18.
The Gauchos got off to a quick start in the second, opening the set with a 5-0 run. A trio of attack errors and a kill by Campbell helped the Titans back into the set, 14-12. The Gauchos continued to extend their lead before a pair of kills by Campbell kicked off a late 5-1 run for the Titans to bring the score to 23-22. But Fullerton ultimately lost the set, 25-22.
UCSB opened the third set hot, taking an early 11-3 lead. An attack error and a service error by the Gauchos kicked off a 5-1 run that helped Fullerton cut its deficit to 12-8. However the lead was ultimately too large as the Titans were unable to close the gap, eventually losing the third set, 25-16.
The Titans' next match will be on the road on Thursday, Nov. 2, against UC Riverside at 6:00 p.m. PT.
