FULLERTON, Calif. — Despite leading the match 1-0 and later 2-1, Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball fell to Cal Poly in five sets (25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 14-25, 6-15) Friday at Titan Gym. The result moves the Titans' record to 1-19 overall and 0-11 in Big West play.
Aubrey Beaver paced Fullerton with a 16 kills on a .577 hitting percentage, both career-highs. She also had seven digs, two aces and a block. Ameena Campbell notched 13 kills on a .323 clip to go with 15 digs. Lyla Traylor, back from injury in her first full match since Sept. 8, had 11 kills and eight digs.
The Titans jumped to a convincing 12-4 lead early in the first set, fueled by an Aaliyah Fasavalu kill and a Beaver ace. Fullerton later extended its lead to 10, 18-8, after kills from Laura Williams and Beaver. The Mustangs fought back to tie things up late, 23-23, but a Campbell kill and a Cal Poly ball handling error gave the Titans set one, 25-23.
The Mustangs responded in set two, taking a 16-5 lead early. A Bianca Martinez kill later sparked a 3-0 Fullerton run, but Cal Poly went on to run away with the second set, 25-14.
In set number three, kills by Traylor, Williams and Campbell highlighted a 7-0 Titan run to put Fullerton up 11-5. The Mustangs came back to take a 21-20 lead late, but back-to-back kills from Traylor gave Fullerton the edge. Traylor later sealed the set for the Titans, 25-22, with another kill.
Cal Poly jumped to a 13-4 lead in set four before a Traylor kill stopped the bleeding. Martinez, Beaver, Campbell and Williams each recorded kills down the stretch, but the Mustangs proceeded to win the set, 25-14, to force a fifth set.
Back-to-back kills from Beaver led Fullerton to a 3-2 advantage in the fifth. But Cal Poly used a 7-2 run to go up 9-4. Campbell notched a kill, but the Mustangs went on to win the fifth set, 15-6, and the match, 3-2.
