XC Men Finish Third, Women Fourth at Big West Championships

NIPOMO, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton men's cross country finished third while the Titan women took fourth place Friday morning at The Big West Cross Country Championships. 

The third-place finish is the Titan men's program's sixth top-three finish in the last seven conference championships. For the women, the result marks the seventh consecutive time the team has finished in the top-four at The Big West Championships. 

Alexis Garcia placed in the top-ten individually for the third consecutive season, earning an eighth-place finish with a time of 24:15.4 to lead Fullerton's men's squad in the 8k. Talman Young followed with a personal-best 24:20.2 to finish 11th individually. 

Jeremiah Castellano finished 18th with a time of 24:35.4, while JT McCoy took 24th with a 24:46.4. Tony Chavez (28th, 25:04.7) and Justin Singer (29th, 25:07.5) also tallied top-30 finishes in the race. Nathaniel Avila rounded out the Titans' scoring runners, placing 38th with a time of 25:18.7. 

As a team, the men's squad earned 89 points to finish third. Host Cal Poly won the meet with 27 total points while UC Santa Barbara took silver with 87 points. 

Jicel Fernandez ran a personal-best time of 21:04.3 in the women's 6k, finishing 10th individually. Mia Bergman followed with a time of 21:29.4 to place 13th while Olivia Ruiz took 17th with a 21:41.5. 

Bella Smith finished 31st individually with a 22:08.9 and Misty Diaz came close behind with a 22:09.7 to place 32nd. Ashlynn Viramontes ran a 22:26.4, placing 40th, and Nanette Novak clocked a 22:31.4 to place 42nd and conclude the team's scoring finishers. 

The Titans' women's squad earned 101 total points to claim fourth place. Host Cal Poly won the competition with 39 points and UC Davis followed with 58. UC Riverside took third with 87 points. 

Fullerton now turns its attention to the NCAA West Regionals, which will take place on Friday, Nov. 10, in Sacramento.
