Women's Soccer Clinches Big West Regular Season Title at Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team won their 10th Big West Regular Season Championship on Thursday night after beating Cal State Bakersfield 4-0 in their final conference match of the season.

The Titans (8-4-7, 6-1-3 BWC) headed into Thursday's match with 18 points, one point behind Cal Poly (19) in the standings.  After the Titans win, they finished with 21 points.  Cal Poly, who needed a win to stay above the Titans, conceded a late goal handing the title over to the Titans. The Titans finished conference play on a 5-game winning streak and a 9-game unbeaten streak.

The Titans came into the match determined knowing that a win was needed to keep pace in the standings.  Graci Raymond scored her first goal of her Titan career in the 5th minute of play.  Kaylin Raibon crossed a ball over to the opposite side of the box that Vanessa Buso headed over to Raymond.  Raymond blasted the ball on the volley past the Roadrunners keeper to put the Titans on top 1-0.

The Titans kept pressing for another goal and were finally rewarded in the 37th minute.  Taya Townsell took a corner kick from the right side that the Bakersfield keeper weakly punched straight to Raibon who headed it over the keeper for the score.  The goal was Raibon's team leading 5th goal of the season.

The Titans headed into the halftime break with a 11-to-2 shot advantage and a 2-0 lead. The Titans wasted no time to add to the score as Kaitin Taylor found the back of the net in the first minute after the restart. Townsell once again took the corner kick and found an open Raibon for the header.  The Bakersfield keeper made a kick save but the ball held up long enough in the air for Taylor to kick it back into the net to make it a 3-0 game.

With the game well out of reach for the Roadrunners, the Titans were able to give minutes to Arion Newby, Jesslyn McCave, and Hannah Griffin.

Finally with Bakersfield pushing to get one final goal for the season.  The Titans were able to counter in the 88th minute to score their fourth and final goal of the game.  Kaylee Noble received the ball from just past the half line and was able to take on two Bakersfield defenders and beat the keeper for her third goal of the season.

After the full time whistle, the Titans weren't assured of their fate until a few minutes later when UCSD scored a late goal in San Luis Obispo and eventually won the game 1-0 over Cal Poly, allowing the Titans to fully celebrate winning the Big West Regular season title.

The Titans have secured home field advantage for The Big West Championships as they will be hosts for the Semifinals and Finals.  The Semis are set to take place on Thursday with the winner of the No. 3 Cal Poly  vs No. 6 Hawaii match taking on UC Davis at 4:30 PM.  The Titans will have the nightcap where they will take on the winner of the No. 4 vs No. 5 matchup between Long Beach State and UC Irvine.

NOTES: With tonight's win over Cal State Bakersfield, Head Coach Demian Brown won the 149th game of his career.  This was the seventh outright championship for the women's soccer program and the sixth time in Demian Brown's career his team came in 1st for the Big West Regular Season title.  The Titans defense kept their fifth clean sheet in a row and have extended their opponent scoreless for 484 minutes and 56 seconds. This is the second best mark in program history with only the 2021 Titans 538:57 mark ranking better. Mia Ranson's individual consecutive shutout streak came to an end with 472 minutes after being replaced by Hannah Griffin in the 78th minute. It was still good for the second best mark in program history, only behind Karen Bardsley 521 minutes set in 2005.
