XC Women Finish Second, Men Third at Highlander Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Led by a fourth place individual finish from Mia Bergman, the Titan women's cross country team placed second while the men took third Saturday at the Highlander Invitational. In all, 15 different Titans clocked personal bests at the meet. 

Bergman raced to a time of 20:19.2 in the women's 6k to place fourth, beating her previous best she set at last year's meet by over 15 seconds. Olivia Ruiz followed with a 20:53.4 to earn 18th place while Jicel Fernandez clocked a personal-best 21:08.7, finishing 24th. 

Ashlynn Viramontes posted a time of 21:20.1 to take 31st and Misty Diaz ran a 21:21.2 to place 32nd. Destiny Lopez followed with a personal-best 21:42.3 while Nanette Novak ran a 21:51.1, rounding out the Titans' scoring finishers. 

As a team, the Titan women earned 90 points to finish in second place. Big West foe Long Beach State won the meet with 81 points, while host UC Riverside took third with 95 points. 

In the men's 8k, Talman Young paced Fullerton with a personal-best time of 24:21.8 to finish 25th. Tony Chavez followed with a personal-best 24:27.5 to take 33rd place and Jeremiah Castellano finished 38th with a 24:36.4. 

Alexis Garcia earned a personal-best time of 24:39.6 to take 39th, while JT McCoy finished 41st with a personal-best 24:43.5. Justin Singer followed with a personal-best 24:49.6 to earn 46th place. Alexandro Vielma also ran a personal-best 24:59.5 to take 58th place, capping the Titans' scoring runners. 

The Titans' men's squad finished in third place as a team with 135 points. Host UC Riverside won the meet with 63 points, while The Master's earned silver with 123 points. 

Up next, Fullerton returns home to host the John Elders Titan Classic on Friday, Oct. 20, at 5:00 p.m. The meet will be the Titans' final tune-up ahead of The Big West Championships on Oct. 27.
