FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's soccer suffered its first conference loss of the season, dropping a home contest to UC Irvine Wednesday night by a final score of 2-1. The Titans are now 10-3-2 on the year and 4-1 in conference play.Â
With the loss, the Titans eight game winning-streak and 11 game unbeaten streak is snapped.Â
UC Irvine got off to a strong start, taking a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of play on a goal scored by Brady Treinen. The goal came from a bouncing ball in the box following a set piece that found the foot of Treinen just inside the 18-yard box.Â
Just a few minutes later, in the 10th minute, UC Irvine extended its lead to 2-0 on an own goal from the Titans. Once again, the goal came from a ball the Titans were unable to clear from their own end which ended up taking a deflection off a defender.Â
The Titans quickly went on the attack looking to get back in the game and finally found a goal in the 34th minute on a great strike by Fitz Williams for his second goal of the season. Redshirt junior, Kyle Kirkland, recorded his first career points in a Titan uniform with the assist on the goal.Â
Fullerton kept looking to break through and score the equalizer for the remainder of the game but could not find it. The Titans out-shot UC Irvine, 18-9, while earning 11 corner kicks to UCI's zero.Â
The Titans are back on the road Saturday as they head to Northern California to take on Sacramento State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. PT.
