Jorge Cerna, an assistant women's basketball coach and directorof player development at San Diego State for the past four seasons,has been hired as an assistant coach with the Cal State Fullertonprogram for 2012-13.
"I would like to welcome Jorge Cerna to the Titan family," Fostersaid. "Jorge comes to us with the knowledge gleaned from hisexperience of working for two very successful head coaches. Hispassion for recruiting and teaching will assist in our quest tobecome a championship-level program."
Cerna recently completed his second season as an assistant at hisalma mater, helping the Aztecs to a 25-7 overall record, MountainWest Conference regular season (12-2 overall) and tournamenttitles, as well as a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the third timein the last four years as a No. 12 seed. SDSU fell to No. 5-seededLSU in the first round, 64-56, in Baton Rouge.
He assisted in all aspects of the Aztecs' program, includingrecruiting, scouting, and player development. On the court, heworked directly with San Diego State's frontcourt, assisting indeveloping the Aztecs' post players.
Prior to becoming an assistant coach, Cerna spent two seasons asthe program's Director of Player Development, coordinating filmexchange, breaking down game and practice film, developing teamhighlight videos, and supervising student managers. He also was astudent manager for the Aztecs' men's squad for three seasons,helping with practice set-up, game statistics, summer camps, andteam travel.
Overall, he was part of a women's basketball coaching staff thatlaid claim to three NCAA Tournament bids, including a spot in the"Sweet 16" in 2010 and a second-round appearance in 2009, andback-to-back 20-win campaigns from 2008-10.
A native of San Diego, Cerna graduated from Christian High Schoolin 2001, where he played four seasons of varsity basketball, andcoached at Marian Catholic High School while a student at San DiegoState, serving as the boys freshman team coach and assisting withthe boys and girls varsity squads.
Cerna graduated in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in social scienceand recently received his master's degree in kinesiology from SanDiego State in 2010. He and his wife, Sarah, were married in 2011and will reside in Laguna Hills.
